Austria salvaged a draw from their group game against Poland after referee Howard Webb awarded a controversial penalty in injury time, which Vasti? duefully converted, becoming the European Championships’ oldest ever scorer, at the age of 39.

Austria had several clear chances early in the match, Harnik failed to score when put through one-on-one with the outrushing Polish goalkeeper Boruc in the 11th minute. Guerreiro scored in the 30th minute for Poland, despite suspicions that he tapped in Saganowski’s cross from an off-side position. Austria pushed for an equaliser in the second half but were held steadfastly by the Polish defence, including some stunning saves from Artur Boruc. In the third minute of injury time referee Howard Webb awarded a penalty to Austria after sighting shirt holding in the penalty-area, which Vasti? scored in a dramatic finale.

Austria will face Germany in a must-win match on Match Day 10 (June 16, 2008), and will be without Sebastian Proedl, who will be suspended, having collected 2 yellow cards in both his appearances so far. Poland will face Croatia, and also must win to qualify for the Quarter-Finals.

Play It Cool

Submitted by: Sandra Prior

Winter puts a freeze on exercising and enthusiasm levels. Knock the urge to hibernate out cold with these four indoor activities and sports workout plan.

Winter is the time for hibernation – for stocking up on food and sleeping away the dark, cold hours. Unfortunately, it’s also the quickest way to get a large gut. Our solutions? Four indoor sports that will keep you motivated to burn kilojoules and a sports-specific workout that’ll improve your sports skills and transform your body into the athletic build you’ve always wanted.

Three rules to keep you at your fighting weight during winter:

1. Make it Easy to Exercise

An exercise program is only as good as your participation. Choose a sport below that you can do at least once a week with mates. Not only will you enjoy the time with friends, they’ll also help to ensure you attend more often.

2. Give yourself Goals

Whether you want to win the league or drop a pants size, goals will help motivate you during the cold season. The secret? Make them realistic. Also, don’t increase your exercise too quickly, as you’ll head straight for injury. Whether it’s kilometres, speed or weights lifted, increase them by only 10 percent a week.

3. Be Smart with your Eating Plan

Don’t hamstring all your exercise benefits by eating the wrong foods. The best way to control what you eat? Pack your own lunch. Make sure you have plenty of fruit and vegetables, and steer clear of sugary, sweet drinks.

Indoor Soccer

Rewards

Improves cardiovascular fitness, acceleration, hand-eye coordination, balance and lower leg strength. It’s called the beautiful game, and the intricate mix of stamina, speed and teamwork translates into sublime gameplay on the field. Besides the skills, soccer is a fantastic cardiovascular workout. There is no time to rest during a game and you’ll be performing repeated sprints, with and without the ball. Your ability to recover from intense exercise will improve 100 fold. But the beautiful game is not only about fitness. You’ll become immersed in the tactics and excitement of it all. The indoor version is a lot quicker than the original, and the action is more intense with more goals and skill required on the ball. In a small area not longer than 40m, you’ll be developing your creativity, agility, dribbling skills, anticipation ability, your ability to cope under pressure and decision making.

Basketball

Rewards

Improves stamina, hand-eye coordination, reflexes, agility, explosive speed and strength and balance. Continuous movement works the cardio respiratory system and melts kilojoules, while quick anaerobic bursts of jumping, directional changes and fast-breaks build strength and endurance. Besides the speed and strength aspects, you can also use basketball to become more agile. Your flexibility can improve through your hands-up defense and lunges for loose balls. During an intense game of basketball you’re going to be burning between 2 500 and 3 000kJ per hour.

Action Cricket

Rewards

Improves hand-eye coordination, reflexes, acceleration and balance. Cricket requires explosive running, quick reactions, timing and power, together with complete focus and concentration, as well as excellent hand-eye coordination – and that’s for a five-day test. Package all of that indoors into a space no larger than a couple of cricket nets for over an hour and you’ve got five-day cricket at warp-speed. The skills required are varied, from the speed and flexibility of bowling to the strength and agility of batting. Fielding demands incredible hand-eye coordination and reflexes. If you need to be awakened from your winter slumber, look no further than your local action cricket venue.

Squash

Rewards

Improves hand-eye coordination, cardiovascular ability, explosive speed and strength, reflexes and balance. Rated as the healthiest sport in a survey conducted by the influential business magazine Forbes, it’s the preferred game for weary executives and businessmen. Thirty minutes on the squash court provides an impressive cardio respiratory workout where you burn around 2 000kJ. The cardio burn is not all that you get from squash. Extended rallies and almost constant running builds muscular strength and endurance in your lower body, while lunges, twists and turns increase your agility, coordination as well as flexibility in your back and abdomen. In addition to all the physical benefits, squash has many others including: improved psychological wellbeing, greater self-confidence, self-esteem and improved concentration.

Special Learning exists to offer every parent with a special child a genuine chance to help their so

by

Silas Herring

Special Learning offers both parents and teachers the tools and resources necessary to help them with a special child suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder and other developmental disorders. By utilising the services offered by this organization, parents and teachers alike can give the special child a real chance at proper education and help with the necessary skills needed to function in everyday life.

There are three steps involved in the Autism Journey:

Step 1: Diagnosis – Helps identify the early signs of developmental disorders such as Autism

Step2: Funding – Is a guide to identify sources for treatments and organise funding plans, and finally

Step 3: Treatment – Offers teachers and parents with resources to identify the best treatment options for the special child.

What is Autism?

You may have heard of Autism or know someone affected by this developmental disorder. But this begs the questions: what exactly is Autism and can someone affected with this disorder be treated?

Autism (also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD) is a developmental disorder that makes it difficult for the affected child to interact or communicate with others. Autism is mostly thought to be genetically related, and parents who have a child with this disorder have a high risk of having another child with the same disorder. Autism is not something that the child can contract from someone else affected with Autism.

The symptoms of Autism rank from low to severe and are most common in males. According to the Center of Disease Control, 1 out of every 110 children is diagnosed with a severe form of Autism. Autism is usually detected when the child is between 1 and 4 years of age. There are no medical tests to confirm the child has Autism, rather doctors rely on observing the child s behaviour and social interaction and information from the parents on how the child behaves at home.

Unfortunately there are no cures for autism but steps can be taken to offer the special child with a very strong chance of proper education and development of necessary life and communication skills. The earlier the treatment is the better the child will be able to learn and implement the education gained with the help of parents and teachers.

Some of the treatments available to a child with this type of developmental disorder include speech therapy, social skills training, physical therapy and behaviour therapy.

One of the leading online organizations offering the tools, resources and information for parents and teachers is Special Learning. Special Learning\’s mission is to create solutions that positively impact the lives of every person affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD) in the global market. Street Sense wins Kentucky Derby

Saturday, May 5, 2007

Street Sense cruised to a 2 1/4 length victory in the 133rd Kentucky Derby on Saturday. Ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, Street Sense is the first Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner to capture the Kentucky Derby, and the colt is the 3rd post-time favorite in the last 7 years to win the Derby, the last two being Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000 and Smarty Jones in 2004.

The second place finisher in this year’s race was Hard Spun. The colt almost got away with running the Derby with a leading position from the starting gate to the finishing wire.

Hard Spun led until the 1-mile mark when Street Sense passed him. The third place finisher, Curlin, made an attempt to be the first Kentucky Derby winner to have not raced as a 2-year-old, something not done in over 120 years plus. He also closed well enough, but could not overtake Hard Spun in the end.

Street Sense went off as the near 5-1 favorite and paid $11.80 to win. The $2 exacta (7-8) paid $101.80, the $1 trifecta (7-8-2) paid $220, and the $1 superfecta (7-8-2-5) paid $14,523.20 with longshot Imawildandcrazyguy in 4th at 28-1. The top three finishers are expected to race in the second leg of the Triple Crown of horse racing at the Preakness in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, May 19.

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, a horse racing fan herself, was a spectator at the 133rd running of the Derby. Her visit to the U.S. also included a visit to Jamestown, Virginia for a celebration marking the 400th anniversary of colonization of the Americas. Jockey Borel has been invited to a white tie dinner at the White House on Monday with President Bush and the Queen.

Study: Taste of beer causes chemical reward in male brain

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

In a study published yesterday online in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, scientists from the Indiana University School of Medicine say the taste of beer alone triggers a release of dopamine, the brain’s chemical reward signal.

Dopamine is a chemical released by the human body and is associated with drug- and alcohol-related use and pleasure. In men with family histories of alcoholism, the dopamine release was greater.

The scientists sprayed 15 milliliters (about one tablespoon) of either beer or a sports drink into the mouths of the participants over a period of 15 minutes, scanning their brains and noting increases in dopamine levels were present. According to the scientists, 15 mL of beer does not contain enough alcohol for the alcohol to cause intoxication or any noticeable increase in blood-alcohol levels.

Brain scans were accomplished with positron emission tomography, an imaging technology using radiation to obtain three-dimensional images of, in this case, the human brain.

The senior author of the study, Dr. David A. Kareken, said “We believe this is the first experiment in humans to show that the taste of an alcoholic drink alone, without any intoxicating effect from the alcohol, can elicit this dopamine activity in the brain’s reward centers”.

Professor of substance use, policy and practice Peter Anderson at Newcastle University in the UK said many “sorts of cues” can cause an urge to drink. “This paper demonstrates that taste alone impacts on the brain functions associated with desire. This is not surprising — if taste increases desire, it has to impact on brain functions.”
