7 Creative Uses Of A Storage Shed

By J.C. Mims

Storage sheds have many uses other than just storage. While storage is what they are designed for, they can easily be transformed into a structure with as many uses as the imagination allows.

After being involved in the storage shed business for nearly two decades I have seen many creative uses for storage buildings.

The following are the Top 7 uses for a storage shed:

7. Temporary house Use a storage building as a temporary home while building a new home on some land, and then use the storage building as a home office. A large storage shed can easily become an efficiency apartment without much extra expense. You can easily insulate the building and add paneling. Put up temporary walls, add a kitchenette, and complete it with a bathroom in the corner with toilet and a stand up shower. Nothing fancy, but still enough to get by.

6. Cabin Got some land that you like to spend time at on the weekends, but not enough to warrant investing to build a new cabin? A large finished out storage building can easily become a cabin with all the bare necessities. (see #7 above for further detail).

5. Barbershop enjoy cutting hair on your own schedule? A storage shed can easily be equipped to become a barbershop. Best of all, your office is now in your backyard. You can add landscaping and accents to add your own personal charm to your new office that will keep your customers coming back.

4. Snow-cone Stand Take a small 8×8 or similar size shed, add some sliding windows to the front, add some shelves, a couple of plugs, and possibly an air conditioner, and you have a quick, inexpensive, seasonal business. Best of all, it is relatively easy to relocate your business from one place to another. You can even leave the shed on a trailer and move it from place to place with ease. Set it up at baseball games, city events, football games, etc

3. Craft Shed Need a place to do your craftwork without having to clean it up and store it away every time you use it? A small storage building can be customized with shelves and all the essentials to meet your needs. No more clean up required.

2. Workshop Have plenty of tools, but dont ever use them because it is too much work to get them out of storage each time? You can customize a storage shed to become a workshop. That way, you can keep everything in eyesight right where you need it. You will find you use all those tools you couldnt live without much more when they are easily accessible.

1. Storage Shed Used as a typical storage shed. The most common uses include lawn and garden equipment storage, atv

storage, furniture storage, and basically anything you are not ready to throw out yet.

As you can see, with a little imagination a storage shed can become so much more than a storage shed. Most people would never imagine you could use a storage shed as a cabin or temporary home. But, having built a number of these for customers I can say first hand that they are surprisingly cozy. Naturally, this is not a long term solution, but it is definitely a cost effective solution to a short term problem.

That is my top 7 (maybe not so common) uses of a storage shed.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND

See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

World’s highest railway links Tibet to rest of China

Saturday, July 1, 2006

The first trains were flagged onto the Qinghai-Tibet Railway line, the world’s highest railway line connecting the Tibetan capital Lhasa with Golmud in Qinghai, China. At its highest point in the Tanggula Pass, the railway line reaches an altitude of 5072 metres.

The line is designed for travel at speeds of 100 km/h on frozen ground to 120 km/h on non-frozen ground. The cabins are supplied with oxygen because of the thin air at the high altitudes. The windows have ultra-violet filters to keep out the sun’s glare. Cooling pipes have been used to ensure the ground remains frozen.

Air trips to Tibet are expensive and road trips slow and dangerous.Three trains, each carrying 900 passengers are scheduled to run daily along the line. The basic tickets cost 389 yuan to go from Beijing to Lhasa. The trip should take just under 48 hours. According to state television the tickets for the inaugural trip sold out within 10 minutes.

Speaking at the flagging-off ceremony in front of the Golmud railway station, the Chinese President Hu Jintao said, “The project is not only a magnificent feat in China’s history of railway construction, but is also a great miracle of the world’s railroad history,”

The Chinese government states that it spent more than US$95 million reducing the environmental damage of this railway. Passengers will not be able to open the windows of the train to litter. There will be a rubbish train to pick up refuse from various sites along the line.

Critics claim that the railway will be used to assert control over Tibet as the line can quickly transport Chinese troops to Tibet during unrest.

They also claim that the railway will damage both the environment and the culture of Tibet. Tibet is home to many endangered species such as the Tibetan antelope.

On Friday, 3 women from the United States, Canada, and Britain were detained for displaying a banner saying “China’s Tibet Railway, Designed to Destroy” at Beijing’s main station.

“It’s the first direct, low-cost, quick, and easy way for migrants to arrive in central Tibet. This will lead to the overwhelming of Tibetans and competition for scarce jobs. The eventual idea is the dilution of Tibetan language, culture and identity,” said Lhadon Tethong, executive director of the New York-based Students for a Free Tibet.

“The railway line itself is not a cause of concern for the Tibetan people,” said Thupten Samphel, spokesman for the Dalai Lama’s government in exile. “How it will be used is the main concern.”

“Despite the rosy economic forecasts and dire predictions of Chinese control, the train is unlikely to touch off social disaster or commercial windfall,” said Andrew Fischer, an economics researcher at the London School of Economics.

“When the railroad opens the commercial service and more people move in and out of the region, I think it will be good for the outside world to know more about Tibetan culture,” Zhu, the railway official, said. “No culture can develop and thrive in a closed environment.”

NASA van rolls off California mountain

Wednesday, December 8, 2004

LOS ANGELES — A commuter van (Van Pool No. 36) from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) plunged 200 feet into a ravine in the Angeles National Forest this morning. The van was carrying ten people: six JPL employees, two NASA employees, and two private contractors. They are identified as:

 • Javier Bautista: Regular Substitute Driver
 • Cheryl Lynn Allworth: Executive Secretary in JPL’s Space Experiments Systems Section
 • Dorothy M. Forks: JPL Human Resources
 • Peter Robles
 • Helga Maria Wurm
 • Jane F. Galloway: JPL Business Manager
 • Kerri Lynn Agey: Contractor for JPL Security Services
 • Christopher Butts
 • Jim Kitahara
 • David Myers

Three of the passengers — Forks, Galloway, and Agey — lost their lives; the remaining seven sustained various levels of injury, including one passenger suffering critical injury, according to authorities. All victims were airlifted to local area hospitals.

According to witnesses who reported the crash, the van simply drove off the side of Angeles Forest Highway. Despite the presence of fog during the accident, the California Highway Patrol believes that this was not a factor. The CHP has said that the investigation into the crash may take two to three days before the cause is known.

JPL spokesperson D.C. Agle confirmed that the van was from the facility. Initially, JPL refrained from commenting, but JPL security was spotted at the site shortly after the incident occurred.

The Angeles Forest Highway is a two-lane mountain road considered a commuter route for many residents of the Antelope Valley including Palmdale and Lancaster residents. It is an alternative to get to Interstate 210, rather than taking the heavily traveled Antelope Valley Freeway (California State Route 14).

Britain’s “Grey Train Robbery” solved

Thursday, November 16, 2006

Two elderly women whose CCTV pictures were shown in newspapers across the UK on Thursday after they were caught on camera stealing a bag at a railway station in Sunderland have turned themselves in.

The police has announced that women admitted the offence and have received an official caution in a case variously dubbed the “Grey Train Robbery” and “Gran Larceny.”

The women contacted police services after the case received major newspaper and media coverage under headlines such as “Nans on the Run” and “Artful Codgers.”

A security camera image released by police showed two grey-haired women, in their 60s or 70s, wearing knee-length skirts, white blouses and overcoats at Sunderland station.

Police had appealed for help in finding the women after a student’s bag was stolen from a station platform.

“They handed themselves in,” police announced in a statement. “They subsequently were interviewed and admitted the offence. Both received police cautions.”

Fake Fireplaces Can Create An Illusion Of Warmth

By M. Jedediah

A lot of people don’t feel at home in a house unless there is a crackling, warm fire to come home to. Unfortunately, fireplaces aren’t built into the design of every apartment or house. Adding them in later can be cost prohibitive and even against lease agreements or code, so a compromise must be made. This is where fake fireplaces can really shine.

While they won’t likely offer the smell of a roaring fire or the fully beauty of the dancing lights, fake fireplaces do have some advantages. They include:

Affordability: The pricing on fake fireplaces over putting in an actual house-structure-changing fireplace is a very big factor. These fireplaces aren’t “cheap,” but they are a whole lot less expensive than hiring a contractor, getting building permits and more.

Safety: Since fake fireplaces don’t generally burn wood, they are not typically considered fire hazards. Some do, however, burn liquid agents, so this might not be the case with all fake fireplaces. Electric ones can be a whole lot safer than any of the options and they can manage to produce heat while giving the illusion of a roaring fire.

Portability: Since fake fireplaces are typically freestanding this means the investment is one that can go with a renter or homeowner whenever they move. They can also be moved from room to room when some designs are chosen. If there’s a desire for the illusion of a fireplace in the dining room, that’s possible. If romance upstairs is on tap, the fake fireplace can be moved typically with ease.

Doesn’t break a lease: Trying to rebuild a room to add a fireplace can be a huge no no in a rental, but having a fake one around is generally okay. Since there will be no structural changes to the apartment or rented house, these are seen as very good options for those on a lease that can’t live without the illusion of a roaring fire on a cold winter’s night.

The options in fake fireplaces are many, too. They include:

Electric: These fake fireplaces don’t even generally burn anything, but they can look like they do. Just plug them in and move them around as needed. They might even manage to provide a little heat while they’re looking pretty, too, which is a great thing for adding to the ambiance.

Gel: These fireplaces burn gel canisters and typically don’t require any ventilation. When the gel’s gone, the canister is simply replaced. The downfall to these creations is that gel doesn’t put out a lot of heat so the full illusion of a fireplace will be a bit murky.

Gas: Gas-burning fireplaces are pretty popular. They don’t require a lot of changes to a room or house’s structure, but they might require a simple vent system be put into play. The gas does provide for a roaring flame and can even produce some heat.

Not everyone can enjoy the roar of a wood fire and the beauty of a fireplace where they live. Whether it’s structural, financial or even climate issues that make this so, fake fireplaces can fix the problem. Offering a variety of choices, these creations give the illusion of a real fireplace without the downfalls.

China overtakes Germany as world’s biggest exporter

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Chinese officials have said that their country’s exports surged last December to edge out Germany as the world’s biggest exporter.

The official Xinhua news agency reported today that figures from the General Administration for Customs showed that exports jumped 17.7% in December from a year earlier. Over the whole of 2009 total Chinese exports reached US$1.2 trillion, above Germany’s forecast $1.17 trillion.

Huang Guohua, a statistics official with the customs administration, said the December exports rebound was an important turning point for China’s export sector. He commented that the jump was an indication that exporters have emerged from their downslide.

“We can say that China’s export enterprises have completely emerged from their all-time low in exports,” he said.

However, although China overtook Germany in exports, China’s total foreign trade — both exports and imports — fell 13.9% last year.

Ten April Fool’s pranks of 2009

Friday, April 3, 2009

April Fools’ Day pranks harmlessly pervaded worldwide again this year. Media outlets and internet sites have joined family, office workers, and friends to provide a wide variety of practical jokes. Ireland, France, and the United States celebrate April Fools all day, whereas a few countries celebrate jokes only until noon such as the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Africa.

Car and Driver claimed that GM and Chrysler were ordered out of NASCAR by the White House by the end of 2009 in order to receive any more government loans. There are press releases about this short-lived prank which received controversial feedback.

The Swiss Tourism Board has announced that volunteers were desperately needed, The Association of Mountain Cleaners “makes sure that our holiday guests can always enjoy perfect mountains. Using brooms, brushes, water and muscle power, they clean the rocks of any bird droppings.”

This year Gmail produced a new autopilot feature for April 1, 2009 which can read your email and automatically respond to every message.

BMW released its new Magnetic Tow Technology which allows your BMW to magnetically attach to the vehicle ahead of you. This enhanced technology allows the driver to remove their foot from the gas pedal and turn off the motor.

The Guardian proposed its move to Twitter, which would allow the newspaper to fit its article content into 140 character messages or “tweets”. Included in this venture was the archiving of past events reported by The Guardian, such as, “1927 OMG first successful transatlantic air flight wow, pretty cool! Boring day otherwise *sigh*”

Google’s technological break through for April Fool’s Day was CADIE, (Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity). By extracting internet search patterns combined with Brain Search, a part of CADIE technology, Google can now search your thoughts and memories.

Wikipedia even fooled Fox News who claimed that “every item on the home page of the user-generated site Wikipedia is fake. The featured Wikipedia article regaled the “Museum of Bad Art” in Boston.” However, each item on the main page was based on reality — even news articles such as NASA reports a shower of diamonds over the Republic of Sudan, which was based on a meteorite which passed over Sudan whose fragments did reveal diamonds upon discovery.

The Conficker Internet worm had been in the news warning of a worst case scenario when computers worldwide would be affected by the virus. Even the chief security adviser for Microsoft, Ed Gibson, didn’t want to make any predictions about what would happen. Experts just knew that it was set to go off on April 1. Several anomalous happenings were attributed to Conficker including Leroy “Mac” MacElrie who claimed to be the programmer of the Conficker worm and turned himself in to police.

Hotels.com ran an advertisement offering hotel room bookings on the moon which would be offered on European websites starting at £800 a night.

Qualcomm ingeniously revealed a new wireless networking technology called wireless convergence. Making use of the flight patterns of pigeons. They then use innovative solutions to converge the birds with wolves to protect the internal improvements.

Media outlets were not the only ones pulling pranks. Gaming websites across the internet Blizzard, Joystiq, and affiliates posted reviews and announcements of games with tongue in cheek. YouTube offered viewers a unique April Fool’s experience as videos were offered upside down. In Ireland, U2 fans received a U2opia concert on a shopping centre roof top concert rather than the real thing.
