Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.

Wikinews interviews candidate for Cleveland mayor Arthur Kostendt

Monday, June 14, 2021

Arthur Oliver Kostendt, a candidate running in the mayoral election of the US city of Cleveland, Ohio set to take place November 2, discussed his campaign and policies with Wikinews this spring.

According to Cleveland Scene, 29-year-old Kostendt is a member of the Cuyahoga County, Ohio Republican Party but has referred to his campaign as “casual”. According to his web site’s personal biography, he was a cadet for the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), scout platoon leader for the 2nd Squadron of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio Army National Guard and logistics officer for the 1st Battalion of the 145th Armored Regiment. He served in Kuwait, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and assisted coalition force detachments in Southeast Asia.

Kostendt is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and summa cum laude graduate of Cleveland State University. He writes he uses an apostrophe to abbreviate his middle name as “Arthur O’Kostendt” instead of the customary period after the O to emphasise his Irish heritage.

A poll published May 5 by Baldwin Wallace University, which does not feature Mr Kostendt, has Dennis Kucinich and Basheer Jones leading in the mayoral race by 17.8 and 13.3 points, respectively, with a margin of error of up to five per cent either way. 48% of those surveyed were undecided. Incumbent mayor Frank G. Jackson, who won the 2017 Cleveland mayoral election with 59% of the vote, is eligible for a fifth term but announced on May 6 he would retire.

How Hiring A Lawyer Helps After Arrests In Cambridge Md

byAlma Abell

When a person is accused of a crime, they are often arrested and taken to the police station in handcuffs to be processed. Depending on the seriousness of the charges, they may be taken to jail to await an arraignment in front of a judge. The whole experience can be confusing to someone who has never been arrested or detained by police and even more so if they are not guilty of a crime. A criminal lawyer can help those who face arrests in Cambridge, MD understand what is happening and ensure that their rights are not violated throughout the process.

If you are arrested in Maryland, you have the right to consult with an attorney. In many cases, it is a good idea to talk to a lawyer before you answer questions posed by police officers. They are trained interviewers and may manipulate the conversation to trick you into giving them information that may later hurt your case. Having a lawyer by your side while you answer questions can keep the police officers or detectives within their limits.

By refusing to answer questions without an attorney present, you may prompt the officers to take you to jail. It is important to stand your ground and not let fear of spending the night in jail make you tell the officers incriminating information. When people ask for attorneys after Arrests in Cambridge MD, officers are required to honor their request and stop their interrogation. However, if you begin talking to them again after you request a lawyer, what you say can be used against you.

Whether you meet with your lawyer at the police station, the jail or in his or her office, it is important to refrain from talking about your case with anyone else until your attorney has a chance to review the arrest report and start preparing your defense. By selecting an attorney with the skills and experience to take on the police and the prosecutor, you may find that your case is dismissed before the trial. If it isn’t, expect your lawyer to be prepared for litigation. Visit the website to learn more about how an attorney can help you.

The Essentials Of Mole Removal

By Robert Kokoska

There are several reasons to have a mole removed. While skin cancer is always the main concern for removing moles, some people choose to have moles removed for cosmetic reasons. There are different types of moles. Some families have a genetic precursor to have atypical moles which puts those family members at a high risk for cancerous moles or other types of skin cancer. While it is always important to try and prevent the formation of these types of moles this cannot always be prevented.

Moles can be raised or flat. The most dangerous moles have uneven edges and are not circular shaped. These moles are best removed by a medical professional. The mole removal is done in office in most circumstances. Most moles can be successfully removed in one office visit. Larger moles may require several office visits to be safely removed.

There are two types of surgical methods of mole removal. The first technique used a tool that burns the mole off of the skin. This is caused excision by cauterization. This is used on moles that are not extremely deep. For deeper moles excision by cutting is required. This type of mole removal requires stitches to close the incision. For larger moles this process may need to be performed in stages to allow healing between mole removal procedures. Laser removal has been attempted but unsuccessful for mole removal due to the depth of the moles in the tissue.

Mole removal should always be done by a trained medical professional. Home mole removal should not be performed no matter how minor the mole seems to be. Complications can arise from mole removal including infection, nerve damage and even scarring. A medical professional can reduce the chances of these complications. Some patients also have reactions to the anesthesia used during the procedure.

For either mole removal procedure the area will be cleaned with an alcohol like substance and then numbed with lidocaine. Many physicians prefer to wait 15 minutes or so after the lidocaine is give to reduce blood to the treated area. This will lessen the bleeding after the procedure. Once the area is prepped for the mole removal procedure the doctor will use the chosen method to remove the mole. A topical antibiotic will be applied after the procedure to prevent infection.

Once the procedure has been completed it is up to you to keep the wound clean and protected. Your doctor will probably send the tissue removed off to be evaluated for cancerous cells. You should receive the results in a few days. Once you have had the mole removal process completed you should take care of your skin to prevent future moles from needing to be removed. It is important to wear sunscreen when out in the sun and to reapply the sunscreen every few hours. You can also wear a hat or other protective clothing to minimize the effects of the sun. It is important to always have any odd shaped moles or other skin irregularities checked by a medical professional.

Photoessay: The Idiotarod: When Good Shopping Carts Go Bad

Wednesday, March 15, 2006

Washington, D.C. —When you mix a shopping cart, six team members, bar hopping and bonus points for schmoozing bar hostesses and sabotaging your enemies, you get the annual Washington, D.C. Idiotarod race. On Saturday, this bizarre fund raising event, which originated in San Francisco 13 years ago, pitted teams of “sleds” together to race from bar to bar in Washington, D.C.’s fashionable Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods. Each “sled” consists of a “borrowed” shopping cart and six human dogs to pull the cart. Points are given for originality, the best time and best sabotage of another sled.

The race is held to benefit the Arlington Food Assistance Center and is organized by Ellen Shortill and Kristen Heatherly. Their organization, called “SMASHED” or “Society for Mature Adults Seeking to Help, Entertain and Donate”, takes the position that donating small amounts many times ultimately benefits the smaller charities. Said Shortill, “Our goal is simply to have fun and raise money for those charities that don’t really get any attention.”

The race this year consisted of 22 teams. Although team “Save NOLA” got to the last bar first, teams can win bonus points for (among other things) flirting with bar hosts and hostesses at any of the five bars along the route. The route is approximately 3 miles long, and each team is required to spend at least 20 minutes in each bar. Heatherly noted that “it doesn’t matter who got here first, ultimately its the team with the most credits and the best time that wins.”

Unique among the participants are brothers Pete and Chris Magnuson who are attempting to get on the 10th edition of Amazing Race on CBS. Their team called “Pick Pete and Chris” ran through the streets with t-shirts hawking their website and their fervent desire to be chosen for the next edition of the television show.

“Its not really about who wins, its that we get to have a blast and raise some money,” said Shortill. The charity event raised about $500 and various canned goods for the food pantry.

New book links Bonds, Giambi and Sheffield to BALCO

Thursday, March 23, 2006

The new book Game of Shadows: Barry Bonds, BALCO, and the Steroids Scandal that Rocked Professional Sports, by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams of The San Francisco Chronicle, is being released today. The authors not only implicate professional baseball celebrity Barry Bonds in the use of performance-enhancing drugs, but also say Gary Sheffield received human growth hormone and testosterone from Greg Anderson, Bonds’s personal trainer.

The book goes on to claim that Jason Giambi also took performance-enhancing drugs from Anderson. Bonds continues to insist that he did not realize his trainer was giving him steriods. He claimed in his grand jury testimony that he thought he was receiving flaxseed oil and an arthritis salve. Sheffield’s response to the claims was quite simple: when asked if the allegations made against him were true, his response was “Nope.”

Despite the book’s accusations of Sheffield and Giambi, it centers around Bonds and the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative or BALCO, Victor Conte Jr. Conte is currently serving four months in prison for distribution of steriods and money laundering. It appears that the steroid controversy concerning Bonds will only intensify as he continues to march on towards the career home runs record, one of baseball’s most sacred records.

7 Creative Uses Of A Storage Shed

By J.C. Mims

Storage sheds have many uses other than just storage. While storage is what they are designed for, they can easily be transformed into a structure with as many uses as the imagination allows.

After being involved in the storage shed business for nearly two decades I have seen many creative uses for storage buildings.

The following are the Top 7 uses for a storage shed:

7. Temporary house Use a storage building as a temporary home while building a new home on some land, and then use the storage building as a home office. A large storage shed can easily become an efficiency apartment without much extra expense. You can easily insulate the building and add paneling. Put up temporary walls, add a kitchenette, and complete it with a bathroom in the corner with toilet and a stand up shower. Nothing fancy, but still enough to get by.

6. Cabin Got some land that you like to spend time at on the weekends, but not enough to warrant investing to build a new cabin? A large finished out storage building can easily become a cabin with all the bare necessities. (see #7 above for further detail).

5. Barbershop enjoy cutting hair on your own schedule? A storage shed can easily be equipped to become a barbershop. Best of all, your office is now in your backyard. You can add landscaping and accents to add your own personal charm to your new office that will keep your customers coming back.

4. Snow-cone Stand Take a small 8×8 or similar size shed, add some sliding windows to the front, add some shelves, a couple of plugs, and possibly an air conditioner, and you have a quick, inexpensive, seasonal business. Best of all, it is relatively easy to relocate your business from one place to another. You can even leave the shed on a trailer and move it from place to place with ease. Set it up at baseball games, city events, football games, etc

3. Craft Shed Need a place to do your craftwork without having to clean it up and store it away every time you use it? A small storage building can be customized with shelves and all the essentials to meet your needs. No more clean up required.

2. Workshop Have plenty of tools, but dont ever use them because it is too much work to get them out of storage each time? You can customize a storage shed to become a workshop. That way, you can keep everything in eyesight right where you need it. You will find you use all those tools you couldnt live without much more when they are easily accessible.

1. Storage Shed Used as a typical storage shed. The most common uses include lawn and garden equipment storage, atv

storage, furniture storage, and basically anything you are not ready to throw out yet.

As you can see, with a little imagination a storage shed can become so much more than a storage shed. Most people would never imagine you could use a storage shed as a cabin or temporary home. But, having built a number of these for customers I can say first hand that they are surprisingly cozy. Naturally, this is not a long term solution, but it is definitely a cost effective solution to a short term problem.

That is my top 7 (maybe not so common) uses of a storage shed.
