Australia: Mat Morgan, Greens candidate in South Gippsland, talks climate, tourism, and local issues with Wikinews

Sunday, September 5, 2021

Since June 2019, the people of South Gippsland Shire, located at the southernmost tip of Australia, have been without a local council, after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council. Administrators were appointed by the Victorian state government in July 2019, who have governed the shire since then. However, South Gippsland’s council is scheduled to be restored with an election to be held via post from October 5-22, 2021.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Mat Morgan. He is running as a candidate in the Coastal-Promontory Ward, and is endorsed by the Australian Greens. The Coastal-Promontory ward covers towns such as Venus Bay, Waratah Bay, Yanakie, Foster, Port Welshpool, and Toora, and elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council.

Somali pirates hijack Indonesian tugboat and Turkish container ship

Wednesday, December 17, 2008

Two more vessels have been hijacked in Somalia. Pirates have captured an Indonesian tugboat with a barge that was working for French oil firm Total and a Turkish container ship.

The Turkish vessel’s seizure was confirmed by a US Fifth Fleet spokesman. MV Bosphorus Prodigy is a 330 ft (100 m) container vessel flagged in Antigua and Barbuda. It is owned and operated by Isko Marine Company based in Istanbul.

The Fifth Fleet could not confirm the tugboat’s seizure, but an anonymous official with Total in Yemen could. He explained the boat and barge were headed to Malaysia from the Yemeni port of Mukalla. He said the crew consisted of both Indonesians and other nationalities, and that the vessels, which had been hired by a subcontractor, were not carrying any oil at the time.

The new hijackings came as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime asked for greater policing in the area by international bodies, and for the signing of agreements that allowed the arresting officer to take pirates back to the officer’s country for prosecution.

“Pirates cannot be keelhauled or forced to walk the plank, nor should they be dumped off the Somali coast,” said the office’s head Antonio Maria Costa. “They need to be brought to justice”.

Emergency declared in US state of Washington, eight additional casualties, many still without power

Monday, December 18, 2006

A state of emergency was declared Sunday for the U.S. state of Washington by governor Christine Gregoire, as additional reports of storm-related casualties surfaced. The state National Guard has been deployed to aid in distributing supplies.

Thousands were still without power in the coastal and Puget Sound regions, though most urban areas were back with power as late as Sunday afternoon, and outages were mostly contained to rural and unincorporated areas. Puget Sound Energy reported that roughly 500,000 energy customers out of the 700,000 who lost power were back in service by Sunday evening. Seattle City Light, the city’s independent municipal utility, reported only 18,000 customers still without power as of Monday morning, down from a peak of 175,000.

Four additional deaths related to the post-storm power outage had been reported as of Monday, bringing the total number of casualties to eight. A man in Gig Harbor was electrocuted by a downed power line while walking his dog. Another man in Spanaway died when an unattended candle caused a house fire.

Two died from carbon monoxide poisoning in separate incidents related to use of combustion devices indoors. Roughly a hundred additional cases of non-fatal carbon monoxide poisoning were reported from people using generators or grills indoors. News radio stations and authorities warned the public to stay away from downed power lines and not to use grills indoors. Dr. Neil Hampson at Virginia Mason’s hyperbaric unit, where a number of victims were being treated, warned it could be “the worse case of carbon monoxide poisioning in the country”.

On Monday, four new carbon-monoxide deaths were reported in a family of five in Burien due to an indoor generator. In Canada, which had some damage from the week’s storms, two southern British Columbia carbon monoxide deaths were also reported. Despite continued warnings, hospitals are still seeing cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, including a family in w:Shoreline, Washington which was taken to the hospital after they reported symptoms due to their indoor grill. Neighbors of the Burien family suggested that noise concerns are leading people to place noisy generators indoors.

The massive power outage left many stores and gas stations unable to operate. Some businesses opened with the help of backup generators, conserving power by foregoing heat and refrigeration, exterior lighting, and half the interior lighting. Most stores had run out of “D” size batteries, the most common size for flashlights, as well as firelogs and other essentials. Gasoline shortages were reported throughout the area, with one man selling excess fuel for as high as $15 per gallon, over 5 times the average retail price.

The Red Cross set up shelters throughout King and other affected counties for those without power or food. Hotels reported no vacancies as whole families took shelter in powered hotels, especially in Seattle. Restaurants also reported brisk business as people sought out a hot cooked meal. Tons of perishable food were expected to have become unsafe after the prolonged outage disabled refrigerators and freezers both in homes and stores.

Many of those without power visited nearby friends and family living where power had been continued or restored, while others traveled out of the area to places that had not been affected. The widespread outage made long-distance traveling treacherous on some major routes, with roadway lighting, cellular towers, and services disabled by the outage.

Most major roadways which were closed during the storm were reopened on Friday. The 520 Floating Bridge over Lake Washington, a major conduit to the technology-rich Eastside, sustained minor damage. Amtrak, which had halted its Cascades service, resumed Saturday evening. Sea-Tac Airport resumed operations with a reduced flight load, after a transient power outage on Friday disabled the airport radar and caused all planes to be grounded until it was repaired.

Understanding Ic Ds Or Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator’s

Understanding ICDs or Implantable Cardiac Defibrillator’s

by

Maynard Jensen

How many times have you seen them being used on TV medical dramas. They seem to make for the ultimate in dramatic medical suspense. The camera zooms in on the patient who is hanging onto life by a mere thread, while a doctor yells clear then jolts them with a cardiac defibrillator. In short order the background music gives a clue as to the outcome. Sad music if the patient is unresponsive, while bright upbeat music means that the patient will soon be opening their eyes.

Cardiac Defibrillators Use Electricity Its plain to see that it is electricity that is the driving force in a cardiac defibrillator but just how it works is somewhat of a mystery to most people. The fact is that the heart muscle responds to electricity and its beat rhythm can be effected by a cardiac defibrillator. Used to Re Establish a Regular Beat In medical emergencies, when the heart stops functioning properly it is still active, however it is beating so irregularly that its ability to pump blood is greatly adversely effected. Cardiac defibrillator are used to get the heart beating again in a regular rhythm which is vital. Commonly Referred to As Pacemakers Implantable cardiac defibrillators are also commonly referred to as pace makers. They function in the same way as the big hand held unit you have seen on your TV shows but are just in miniature form. They are implanted in the chest and keep tack of the hearts beating patterns and will automatically deliver a shock to the heart if they sense an abnormality. A Less Powerful Jolt of Electricity However; they don’t use the same powerful jolt that the big hand held defibrillators on the TV shows do. This is because the electrical impulse that implantable defibrillator’s deliver is much closer to the heart due to small electrical wires that are placed near the heart when the pacemaker is implanted.

Miami police shoot, kill naked man chewing face of male victim

Sunday, May 27, 2012

Police in Miami, Florida fatally shot a naked male who appeared to be chewing off the face of his male victim. The attack happened yesterday, approximately around 2:00 pm EDT (18:00 UTC) on the NE 13th Street off-ramp of Miami’s MacArthur Causeway, where the headquarters of The Miami Herald newspaper is located. The shooting was captured on the Herald building surveillance camera, which police have requested.

Around 2:00pm, Miami Police were notified of the incident and responded. An officer came upon the two men fighting and found the naked attacker chewing at the face of the male victim who was also naked. The officer called over the loudspeaker of his police cruiser for the man to cease his attack, which the man failed to heed. The officer then shot the attacker once, who continued attacking the victim despite being shot. The officer fired additional shots at the attacker in what was described by various witnesses and sources as “a half dozen shots”. The victim was then brought to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Center with critical to severe facial injuries and is reported to be in intensive care.

The camera footage from the Miami Herald building shows a police cruiser pulling up at the off-ramp, which is partly obscured by the overhead tracks of the Miami Metromover. The video then shows the officer getting out of the cruiser and apparently commanding the man to stop attacking. The officer then pulls his service weapon and appears to fire his gun. Afterwards, the camera zooms in and shows the lower body of one man lying motionless on the ground, while another appears to be rolling around in pain. The Herald edited the video to obscure the victim.

Detective Willie Moreno, spokesperson for the Miami Police, said, “During this confrontation an officer did discharge his weapon striking one of the individuals.” Moreno added, “That individual has lost his life right now.”

Police have not identified the attacker, victim, or officer involved in the shooting. However, Javier Ortiz, the spokesperson for the Miami lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, said, “Based on the information provided, our Miami police officer is a hero and saved a life.”

A news release by the Miami Police stated, “As with all active investigations, there are many details that cannot be discussed until we have gathered all the facts. Detectives are still trying to gather details and urging any passersby who might have seen something to contact them.” According to the Herald, police believe the attacker may have been experiencing stimulant psychosis.

Wikinews interviews John Wolfe, Democratic Party presidential challenger to Barack Obama

Sunday, May 20, 2012

U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate John Wolfe, Jr. of Tennessee took some time to answer a few questions from Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn.

Wolfe, an attorney based out of Chattanooga, announced his intentions last year to challenge President Barack Obama in the Democratic Party presidential primaries. So far, he has appeared on the primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, and Louisiana. In Louisiana, he had his strongest showing, winning 12 percent overall with over 15 percent in some congressional districts, qualifying him for Democratic National Convention delegates. However, because certain paperwork had not been filed, the party stripped Wolfe of the delegates. Wolfe says he will sue the party to receive them.

Wolfe will compete for additional delegates at the May 22 Arkansas primary and the May 29 Texas primary. He is the only challenger to Obama in Arkansas, where a May 10 Hendrix College poll of Democrats shows him with 38 percent support, just short of the 45 percent for Obama. Such an outing would top the margin of Texas prison inmate Keith Russell Judd, who finished 18 percent behind Obama with 41 percent in the West Virginia Democratic primary; the strongest showing yet against the incumbent president. Despite these prospects, the Democratic Party of Arkansas has already announced that if Wolfe wins any delegates in their primary, again, due to paperwork, the delegates will not be awarded. Wolfe will appear on the Texas ballot alongside Obama, activist Bob Ely, and historian Darcy Richardson, who ended his campaign last month.

Wolfe has previously run for U.S. Congress as the Democratic Party’s nominee. On his campaign website, he cites the influence “of the Pentagon, Wall Street, and corporations” on the Obama administration as a reason for his challenge, believing these negatively affect “loyal Americans, taxpayers and small businesses.” Wolfe calls for the usage of anti-trust laws to break up large banks, higher taxes on Wall Street, the creation of an “alternative federal reserve” to assist community banks, and the implementation of a single-payer health care system.

With Wikinews, Wolfe discusses his campaign, the presidency of Barack Obama, corporations, energy, the federal budget, immigration, and the nuclear situation in Iran among other issues.

U.S. government seeks to examine Guantanamo inmates’ documents

Saturday, July 8, 2006

Lawyers asked a federal court Friday to allow the government to inspect written materials that it seized from inmates at Guantanamo Bay last month and requested approval to use “filter teams” to look at documents that may contain privileged lawyer-client communication.

In documents they filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, government lawyers argued that three inmates who committed suicide last month by hanging themselves coordinated their actions by using attorney-client confidentiality to communicate with each other. Government officials said that among papers marked “Attorney Client Privilege” were instructions on how to tie knots and a classified memo on camp activities and inmate locations.

Military officials seized more than 1,100 pounds of documents from inmates after the suicides on June 10. They have since stopped defense lawyers from sending any documents to inmates.

In an affidavit that lawyers for the government filed with the court, Rear Admiral Harry B. Harris Jr., the naval commander of the camp, described evidence of a “larger plan or pact for more suicides” among detainees. His statement implied that the investigation might extend to defense attorneys as third parties who “encouraged, ordered or assisted” the detainees in killing themselves.

Harris earlier described the suicides as part of a pattern of hostile actions on the part of terror suspects. “They have no regard for life, either ours or their own,” he said last month. “I believe this was not an act of desperation, but an act of asymmetrical warfare waged against us.”

The Center for Constitutional Rights, which has provided legal assistance to about 200 Guantanamo detainees, has been critical of the conditions at Guantanamo Bay that they say finally led the detainees to kill themselves in desperation.

Barbara Olshansky, a deputy legal director at CCR, described the government’s latest legal activity as a tactic to impede detainees’ access to legal representation “and to make these lawyers fight for yet another thing.”

Last month after the document seizures, defense attorney Richard Wilson, who represents a Canadian detainee, said in an affidavit that the military had told him that they were conducting no investigation into the role of attorneys in the prisoners’ deaths.

He added, however, that at least one detainee claimed that camp officials had confiscated his written materials and told him that they were looking into “whether lawyers had actively encouraged detainees to commit suicide.”

Drop Cards, Sizzle Cards, Dollar Cards, And Business Cards What’s The Difference?

By Jennifer Valente

What to do with all of these options? Which is what, and what is best? Aren’t they all the same, or are they different? Or, are they almost the same as being different? Okay, calm down… Let’s see if we can sort this stuff out and decipher what the differences are between all of these marketing tools.

Since ‘business cards’ were first on the scene, let’s start there. As a brief history, business cards were originated in 17th century France, although some research shows they were first used in 15th century China. In either case, they were referred to as “Visiting Cards” which were more like invitations. However they were utilized for just about any purpose where brief writing would be appropriate. Visiting cards soon evolved into “Trade Cards” where they specifically provided business information including a map to the business. As printing methods were developed to become more efficient, “business cards” became a more popular means of distributing advertising for one’s business.

Business cards have not changed much in the last couple hundred years aside from adding color and maybe glossing them up a bit. Now if there’s any wonder why business cards haven’t changed much in the last couple hundred years, the answer is simple; as bland as they may be, they’re still somewhat effective and they serve their purpose.

Relative to the business card, the “drop card” has a rather brief history. So brief in fact, that you’d be hard pressed to find any factual historical information on them at all. In conducting any research at all, you’re most likely to see someone advertising their version of a drop card for sale or their advice on how to use them.

Sizzle Cards are essentially synonymous with drop cards. With an even more recent history, the term “sizzle card” was simply coined as a marketing term to emphasize that a drop card should have a message so hot that it sizzles. So if drop cards are the same as sizzle cards, how are they different than business cards? While a business card is simply a card that contains as much information regarding a business as possible, a drop card typically has very little information. They generally have just enough information to peak someone’s curiosity to make them want to call or log on to a website. It may not have any real information at all, but more of a statement with a call to action that “sizzles.” An example of a drop card message might be something like, “WE MAKE MONEY FOR YOUR BUSINESS! Visit http://www.DollarCardMarketing.com for details” or “PUT OUR MONEY TO WORK FOR YOU! Call (888) 282-6887 for more information.”

As young as drop cards and sizzle cards may be, they are also beginning to see some evolutionary progress. As many things evolve and develop, they tend to go through a series of trials and errors. Such would be the case with dollar cards. Dollar cards are a brilliant innovation to the drop card and sizzle card concept, but unfortunately, were initially poorly executed. I believe the first attempts at this novelty were created with a million dollar card. Although seemingly an interesting idea because you could use such slogans as, “Thanks a million!” or “This opportunity could be worth a $Million Dollars!”, it just smacked of being entirely phony when executed.

Many printers would not even consider trying to recreate actual U.S. currency for fear of the unknown concerns of whether or not it was legal. Until recently, the million dollar drop card was about as innovative as you could get with sizzle card marketing. Nowadays, a few have ventured into reproducing U.S. currency for the purposes of dollar card marketing. However, you can see by the quality of most, that they still have not done their legal research or they simply don’t care to produce a quality product. Although some of the dollar card vendors are venturing into U.S. cash, most still do not have a convincing enough appearance to be as effective as they could be.

The most common dollar cards are produced in denominations of the $20 dollar bill and the most popular $100 dollar bill drop cards. The most realistic dollar sizzle cards can be found at DollarCardMarketing.com where they customize $5, $10, $20, and $100 dollar cards for any business that asks for them. It is evident that a great deal of consideration went into selecting specific paper and ink tone as well as assuring the detail of the printing process.

Owner and designer, John Valente, states that Dollar Card Marketing was born out of a need he had to promote an MLM program a friend had introduced to him. Although his enthusiasm for the MLM program was not overwhelming, he wanted to make an effort and find a unique method of marketing and promoting it. Not finding anything of decent quality at a reasonable enough price, he took matters into his own hands. Having experience with graphic design software and living amongst San Diego’s abundant resources, he put together a set of realistic cash designs, created a website, aligned himself with some local resources for quality paper and printing, and after some due research and a series of consultations and meetings; Dollar Card Marketing emerged. Now the premier source for dollar bill sizzle cards, Dollar Card Marketing is shipping out tens of thousands of these amazing innovations to businesses and independant sales reps all over the country.

Yet another difference between traditional business cards and drop cards (or sizzle cards) is the means by which they are distributed. As business cards are traditionally presented from one person to another, typically during or immediately following a business conversation, drop cards have vastly more flexible distribution methods. Drop cards, as their name suggests, can simply be “dropped” in a busy public area. If you’re using an ordinary sizzle card, it’s best to place them on tables in public areas such as a coffee shop or waiting room where someone would be able to read it without even picking it up. However, if you’re using something like the 100 dollar bill business card, well you can leave those just about anywhere and someone’s bound to scramble to pick it up within seconds. Even a $5, $10, or $20 dollar drop card is going to command immediate attention upon sight. Now of course, we don’t condone littering. However, if you were to drop one on a shopping center sidewalk and step aside and wait a moment while someone picks it up, then it’s not littering. It’s merely a temporary placement. This also affords you the opportunity to approach the finder of your card and perhaps make your pitch. Put one on a coffee shop chair as if it has fallen out of someone’s pocket. How long do you suppose it will stay there? You could even be as direct and go into a place of business and just hand one over to the manager with your pitch. Do you think they’ll get some immediate attention there? Absolutely.

If you still can’t get passed the “littering” idea, then they’re just as effective being handed person to person just like a traditional business card, but better. Imagine if you were a network marketer and you handed a $100 dollar drop card to someone. You could say something like, “This card is worth $500-$1000 a week for a part time effort.” You’d be mistaken if you didn’t think that most people would take that card swiftly out of your hands and hold on to it.

Some of the obvious benefits to dollar bill drop cards is that they’re realistic enough that people will notice immediately. They will go out of their way to get their hands on it and they’ll keep it in their wallets or purses for a good long time. They’re also very likely to share it with their friends and family, and they’ll NEVER throw it away. Can that be said about your average, every day, business card? No way.

Oil spill near Black Sea as storm sinks three ships

Monday, November 12, 2007

A fierce storm on Sunday resulted in massive 18-foot waves, which split a Russian oil tanker in two and sank two Russian freighters nearby. The tanker spilled at least 560,000 gallons of fuel into a strait which leads to the Black Sea, and officials say it may take years to clean up. The tankers sank in the Strait of Kerch, which links the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov in the northeast. The two ships were carrying a total of around 7,150 tons of sulfur, according to Sergei Petrov, Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations regional spokesperson.

The tanker was carrying nearly 1.3 million gallons of fuel oil, and was stranded several miles from shore. Emergency workers were prevented from collecting the spilled oil immediately due to stormy weather; the head of the state environmental safety watchdog Rosprorodnadzor, Oleg Mitvol, said “there is serious concern that the spill will continue”. Workers eventually managed to begin work on cleaning up the spill, an effort which may be long-term. Tar-like sands laden with oil and seaweed were piled on the shore, while oil-covered birds in slick-covered water tried to flap their wings. Regional coast guard officer Anatoly Yanhuck said once weather improves they will begin pumping oil from the tanker, then tow the ship to port.

Two fuel-loaded barges and Turkish freighter Ziya Kos also ran aground in the area, but there was no further environmental damage, said Petrov. Ten ships altogether were sunk or run aground in the area of the Black Sea near the Straight of Kerch and the Straight itself; a Russian freighter carrying metal was also reported as having sunk near the port of Sevastopol on Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.

One of the sulfur-carrying freighters reported three crew members as drowned, and five more as missing, while two members of the sunk freighter carrying metal were reported as drowned and another remains missing. The oil tanker’s 13 crew members were all rescued safely, and all members of the second freighter were also reported as safe.

Captains had been warned Saturday morning of the stormy conditions, regional prosecutor Maxim Stepanenko told Russia’s Vesti 24. The oil tanker was not built to withstand fierce storms, having been designed to transport oil on rivers during Soviet times, he said.

Chemist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean Service office of response and restoration, Jim Farr said the sulfur spill from the two freighters wouldn’t create a “hazardous situation”, a statement backed up by Alexei Zhukovin, expert with the Emergency Situations Ministry’s branch in Southern Russia. Although on land sulfur is used as a fungicide, in a marine setting it wouldn’t act as one, said Farr; instead a sulfur spill can be compared to dumping sand on a reef and smothering it, or placing a blanket on a bed of grass. Long-term effects are more difficult to speculate on, however, without better knowledge of the area and its currents. Oleg Mitvol said that although the sulfur spill doesn’t present an environmental danger, the two freighters might also leak fuel oil from their tanks, adding to the pollution.

Russia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, and Ukraine all border on the Black Sea.
