U.S. minimum wage gets first federal boost in a decade

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

A federally mandated minimum wage increase for U.S. workers goes into effect today. The 70 cents per hour increase, from US$5.15 to $5.85, is the first hike since 1997.

The increase, which was approved by Congress in May, is the first stage of a 3-step increase over the next two years. Next summer, the minimum will increase by another 70 cents per hour, followed by another bump of 70 cents in the following summer, bringing the minimum wage to US$7.25 an hour by 2009.

The increase is aimed at helping minimum wage earners keep above the poverty level. The United States Department of Health and Human Services considers anyone who earns less than $10,210 per year to be in poverty. At the previous minimum wage level, a person working 40 hours a week would only exceed this by $500 a year.

As many as 20 states took the initiative to raise minimum wages before this federal government action became effective. Those states will only be affected by the new law if they fall beneath the new federal mandate.

By comparison, today’s current minimum wage for adults in the United Kingdom is equivalent to almost $11.50. As of 2005, Mexico’s minimum wage was Mex$4.50. The lowest minimum wage in Canada is C$6.50 in New Brunswick. The highest in Canada is in Nunavut, C$8.50 or US$8.15.

Many countries in Europe, such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Cyprus have no minimum wage laws, but rely on employer groups and trade unions to set minimum earnings through collective bargaining. As of December 2006, the Australian standard federal minimum wage is A$13.47 per hour, equivalent to US$11.90.

The Simple Way I Plan For Penn State Football Match Ups

The Simple Way I Plan For Penn State Football Match Ups

by

Dylan Vanland

There are 7 days annually that i absolutely love. Those are the 7 home games that Penn State plays football at State College, Pennsylvania. I have been going to these types of games since I was in college, and its just been the program for me and my loved ones for many years. We do not skip a game if possible.

Seeing a game in Happy Valley is special. The environment is as fine as it gets in college football. State College, Pennsylvania is right in the center of the state of Pennsylvania, and as you descend into the city, this feels like everyone in the state is actually arriving next to you. You certainly feel that way whenever you appear in the car parking lots and see the RVs and tailgaters as far as the eye is able to see. My personal routine gets going early on in the morning as I get myself and my loved ones outfitted in Penn State apparel. Personally, I never attend PSU football games without having wearing my good fortune Penn State jersey. Because I like to sit down within or close to the college student area, and they have a custom of putting on white for the Penn State White Out effect, I’ve got a white Penn State football jersey. My wife has a Penn State ladies jersey and my kids have Penn State youth jerseys. Though the gear doesn’t stop with jerseys, because there’s a lot more. If it is chilly, we may layer up with a Penn State sweatshirt too. A fleece one is ideal in the event that it is a cold late in the season game. White, blue, or even gray Penn State sweatshirts tend to be good too, I’ve got them all in my wardrobe. My family and I additionally possess PSU hats, t-shirts, and overcoats, so whatever Penn State equipment is needed for that days situation, we now have. Next, all of us stock up the car with tailgating equipment. The most important products would be the basic: chairs, grill, coolers, food, and drinks. I have a Penn State Chair which Ive had forever that i bring to every game, and I personally use it extensive prior to and after games. We now have about a 2 hour drive to State College, therefore all of us generally depart about 6-7 hours prior to kick-off. Weve had the same parking spot in State College for many years, and it is where we tail gate with our fellow Penn State enthusiasts. We like to get there early to set up the barbeque grill, furniture, chairs, and a few games (we love to play corn hole). Luckily, we have other tailgaters with a portable satellite television dish and Tvs to ensure that we are able to watch all the morning college football games (especially Big 10 games) whilst preparing for that large game. The main part of tailgating is mingling with close friends, however meals preparation and consumption is important as well. We turn up the barbeque grill early and keep it going all day. Usually multiple types of meats get tossed on, personally I like any kind of red meat to go with my adult drink during tailgating. Dont forget to have ample ice and mixers. Tailgating is actually enjoyable, however I always remind everyone that the key reason we are there is for the game. I love to be in Beaver Stadium twenty minutes prior to kick-off. This allows me to soak in all the pre-game festivities, like the clubs running out on the field, Joe Paternos entrance, and the actual amazing sound of 100,000 fans screaming Lets Go.Penn State. These are my personal favorite seven days of the year.

Naomi Campbell testifies against former Liberian president

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Supermodel Naomi Campbell testified for prosecutors on Thursday in a war crimes case against former Liberian president Charles Taylor.

Taylor allegedly gave an uncut blood diamond to Campbell in 1997 when they met for dinner in South Africa, according to Professor David Crane of Syracuse University.

Crane told Voice of America, “The testimony itself is important because the prosecution wants to show that Charles Taylor has the mindset or what we call the mens rea to use the blood diamonds that were mined by Sierra Leoneans chained to pits in the Kailahun and Kenema area. And, he was using them for various reasons: to buy guns, to use cash to deposit, and also to buy influence.”

Taylor denies he possessed any uncut diamonds.

Campbell said in her testimony, “When I was sleeping I had a knock on my door. I opened my door and two men were there and gave me a pouch and said, ‘A gift for you.'” She said the men gave her “very small, dirty looking stones.”

She continued, “At breakfast I told Miss [Mia] Farrow and Miss [Carole] White what had happened and one of the two said, well that’s obviously Charles Taylor, and I said, yes I guess it was.”

Campbell was not sure Taylor sent her the blood diamonds and she claimed she assumed it was the accused and continued stating it was unlikely anyone else gave her the gift.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague, The Netherlands ruled that no one may sketch, take photographs, or make videos of Campbell, due to her high profile. Photographers were barred from taking photos of Campbell entering or leaving the courthouse, but her testimony was recorded as usual.

Japanese detain two anti-whaling activists, deny abuse claims

Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Yesterday at 6:00 UTC at 60° S 78° E , a Japanese whaling ship detained two Sea Shepherd Conservation Society activists in the Southern Ocean. Japan’s Institute of Cetacean Research (IRC) deny Sea Shepherd claims that they have been abused. The Japanese government has assured the Australian Government the release of the men.

According to the conservation agency Sea Shepherd, Australian Benjamin Potts, 28, a helicopter assistant, and Briton Giles Lane, an engine room worker, were detained on board a Yushin Maru No. 2 after delivering a letter asking the ship to exit Antarctic waters .

Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd’s vessel, Steve Irwin, said that the Japanese “tried to throw them overboard, then they tied them to a bulkhead and were beating them”.

He alleged that the men were tied to the radar masts before being brought below deck after which the men were not seen. Sea Shepherd’s international director, Jonny Vasic, claimed that they were “basically strapped by the arms with zip-ties and tied with rope around their chests” for 2½ to three hours.

The captain said he was surprised as he expected Japanese whale ships to treated his men more decently.

“We are concerned but I know the Australian and British governments are in touch with the Japanese government.”

Sea Shepherd said it has photographic evidence that the whalers were abusing the men.

However, the Japanese ship refuted the allegations.

“Any accusations that we have tied them up or assaulted them are completely untrue,” Director-general of the IRC Minoru Morimoto said in the press release, “It is illegal to board another country’s vessels on the high seas.”

Detaining the activists was the “only way”, he said. “You couldn’t have them running around the deck not knowing what they’re going to do.”

He said that the activists were making attempts to entangle the screw and were throwing bottles of butyric acid, as rancid butter, onto the deck of the vessel before boarding the vessel. Mr Watson has confirmed this and said that they were to act as a stink bomb but their actions were still peaceful.

Hideki Moronuki, the chief of the whaling section of The Fisheries Agency of Japan, claimed that “nobody took violent action against the two illegal intruders”.

Mr. Moronuki said that they were treated “very, very humanely” and were provided with “a warm, delicious hot meal”, “[a] warm, nice bath” and “[a] nice bed with clean white sheets”.

Australian foreign minister Stephen Smith said that the Japanese government promised him the release of the men late yesterday night.

“Late last night I was advised the Japanese had agreed to this and they had instructed the relevant whaling ship to return the men to the Steve Irwin,” he told ABC radio.

Mr. Moronuki said the “two illegal intruders” will not be released by the vessel’s captain until “Paul Watson has accepted the conditions of the safety of the Japanese vessel”. He said he knew nothing of the comments that the Japanese government agreeing to release the men.

Mr. Watson said the Japanese were “[holding] hostages and make demands” and were acting like “a terrorist organisation”. A press release said Sea Shepherd “will not negotiate with poachers and demands that the Japanese whalers release Benjamin Potts and Giles Lane as soon as possible”.

Mr. Watson said he would not send a zodiac to collect the men as requested in an email because it “endangers the life of the crew, to put them out in these waters in a small boat, 10 miles out of view”.

On Sky TV, IRC spokesman Glenn Inwood said Sea Shepherd were “not answering phone calls or emails at this stage” to take advantage of “fair amount of media coverage” but they were “still making attempts to contact them”.

An Australian Federal Police spokeswoman said that Sea Shepherd made a police report at around 7:00 UTC.

US swimmer Phelps suspended over ‘pot pipe’

Friday, February 6, 2009

United States swimmer Michael Phelps has been banned from competition and his training stipend revoked for three months by USA Swimming after Phelps was photographed smoking from a glass pipe, often used for smoking cannabis. The picture was published last Sunday by British tabloid News of the World.

USA Swimming, which is the governing body of swimming in the United States, however said that no “anti-doping” rules had been violated.

“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” it stated. “Michael has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and has committed to earn back our trust.”

Should Phelps have been punished at all? If so, was the punishment strict enough?

The suspension will end in time for Phelps to train for the US Championships, which are to be held on the 7th of July.

Phelps has also lost sponsor Kellogg, who said that it would not renew its deal with the swimmer next month.

Should Your Aging Parent Come To Live With You?

By Molly Shomer

Tell people you’re thinking about bringing a parent to live with you and your family in your home and half will say, “I’d rather have root canal without anesthetic!” The other half will show varying degrees of enthusiasm, depending on their relationships with their own parents.

If the thought of having your parent or your in-law move in spontaneously makes you clench your teeth, then this isn’t a good option and you can stop reading now.

On the other hand, if you think it might be a good idea, there are several things you should thoroughly explore before you forge ahead with moving a parent in with you and your family.

First, do you all genuinely like each other most of the time? That doesn’t mean, “Do you never have disagreements? or, “Do you never get upset with each other?” Show me a family who says they never have disagreements, never argue, and always feel 100% about each other all the time and I’ll show you a family that needs some serious help. Someone isn’t seeing it like it is.

Family members who genuinely like each other (most of the time) are able to have disagreements, even arguments. At the end of the day healthy families can resolve their differences, or agree to differ, and move on. If there are unresolved conflicts it would certainly be a good idea to tend to these before making a major change.

How do all the members of your family feel about having an in-law or a grandparent move in? Children should be heard, even if they are not given a final vote. Does the older person have health issues or behaviors that an older child or adolescent would find embarrassing? Are you prepared to manage the practically inevitable teen-age resentments?

Is your home spacious enough to accommodate your parent comfortably on the ground floor? Will a child have to relinquish a room? Is there a bathroom large enough to handle a walker, a wheelchair, and other equipment that may be needed? Do you have the resources to make any necessary renovations?

Can your parent live independently, or does he or she require assistance? Is the assistance something that you can provide, or will professional help be needed? Does your parent have health issues which will predictably call for more and more help? Will you need to make other living arrangements if your parent’s needs grow beyond a certain point?

Will you be in danger of falling back into your old role of “daughter” or “son” instead of head of your own household if your parent or in-law moves in? Will you be able to set limits, and will your elder be able to adjust to the rules and customs of your house, which might be quite different from what he or she is accustomed to?

What will the financial arrangements be between you and your parent(s)? It is very important to come to a firm mutual agreement about how finances will be managed well before a move. This may be the most difficult part of any discussion you have with a parent, because money and all of its implications is usually a “loaded” subject between the generations.

Talk these questions through thoroughly with everyone involved. Give serious thought to the compromises you would be willing to make, and what you would not be able to do. Be completely honest with yourself and your other family members, and give them the opportunity to be completely honest with you.

Then, and only then, if you feel certain that this move would be a positive one for you, your family, and your parent…and if your parent feels the same…move forward with confidence that you at least have a firm foundation to build on.

‘Bridezilla’ YouTube video: many debate legitimacy

Wednesday, January 31, 2007

A new video on popular internet video site YouTube has raised a question: Is it fake or real?

The movie entitled Bride Has Massive Hair Wig Out that was released on the 18th of January shows a woman who is going to get married within hours, but instead she cuts off all her hair.

First, the woman, named Jodie, who has just got her hair done at the hairdressers’, comes back to a hotel room where three bridesmaids are doing last-minute preparations. She runs in and falls to the ground screaming that her hair is ugly. They try to comfort her, but that isn’t enough for the so called “Bridezilla”: she cuts off her hair with a pair of scissors while the bridesmaids watch, taping it all on video camera.

The video, which is still on the main page of YouTube, has been watched over 2 million times. The person who posted the video, wigoutgirl, claims to be 25 and from Canada. It is speculated that the video was shot in a Toronto, Ontario hotel room.

Some YouTube users are saying that it is fake, some say it’s real.

Gastric bypass surgery performed by remote control

Sunday, August 21, 2005

A robotic system at Stanford Medical Center was used to perform a laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery successfully with a theoretically similar rate of complications to that seen in standard operations. However, as there were only 10 people in the experimental group (and another 10 in the control group), this is not a statistically significant sample.

If this surgical procedure is as successful in large-scale studies, it may lead the way for the use of robotic surgery in even more delicate procedures, such as heart surgery. Note that this is not a fully automated system, as a human doctor controls the operation via remote control. Laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery is a treatment for obesity.

There were concerns that doctors, in the future, might only be trained in the remote control procedure. Ronald G. Latimer, M.D., of Santa Barbara, CA, warned “The fact that surgeons may have to open the patient or might actually need to revert to standard laparoscopic techniques demands that this basic training be a requirement before a robot is purchased. Robots do malfunction, so a backup system is imperative. We should not be seduced to buy this instrument to train surgeons if they are not able to do the primary operations themselves.”

There are precedents for just such a problem occurring. A previous “new technology”, the electrocardiogram (ECG), has lead to a lack of basic education on the older technology, the stethoscope. As a result, many heart conditions now go undiagnosed, especially in children and others who rarely undergo an ECG procedure.
