Before the McIntire family of Austin, Texas sat down for their Thanksgiving dinner Thursday, the family discovered something unusual: a live turkey buried in their front yard.

The eldest child of the family, Sean, was returning from work yesterday when he stumbled upon the patch of fresh dirt in his yard. He called his father out to look at the patch, then proceeded to examine its contents. The family then discovered the thirteen pound (6 kg) turkey buried in the hole; the turkey was still breathing. They kept the turkey in a dog cage, ate thanksgiving dinner, then took the turkey to a veterinarian where it died during examination.

“The turkey must have been alive in the ground for at least 2 days” said Bill Rogers, the McIntires’ veterinarian, “It takes at least that long for a turkey to starve to death.” No legal assistance has been given to the McIntires to find the person who buried the turkey, although the McIntires say the act violates animal cruelty laws.

What Is Lasik Surgery?

What is Lasik Surgery? by Tom Smith..Lasik surgery improves the eyesight so individuals do not require contact lenses or eye glasses. The success rate to restore the vision back to 20/20 is very high but results vary from person to person. The surgeon chosen will also have an effect on the results you achieve.Vision after laser surgery is different from the vision experienced with the used of eye glass lenses and contact lenses. Lasik surgery patients may not see as clear a picture as one would with eye glasses. On thing is for sure, Lasik surgery patients experience an immediate change in vision. Generally, recovery is much quick that other surgeries and you may be seeing better on the day of your surgery. As time passes, the results of improved vision can continue until peak. Some people have different recovery experiences though. It can take one person several days in some cases to get back to normal, while others are fully recovered almost instantly. The vast majority of the time, Lasik patients do not have to wear contacts anymore. To some extent though, age can play a factor. The greater the age of a Lasik patient, the more likely he or she will need glasses for things like reading. However, glasses or contacts are generally not required for other normal activities. There are additional procedures that can address needs of patients who wear bifocal lenses and desire not to wear reading glasses after the Lasik surgery. For example, a monovision procedure can address such needs by correcting farsighted problems in one eye and nearsighted in the other. Some side effects can occur with Lasik surgery. For example, some patients have reported seeing rings around objects that are bright. This can be magnified at night when driving. This is usually a temporary side effect and generally not a serious concern for most patients. While Lasik is intended as a permanent solution, your way of life and habits can still affect your vision in a post-Lasik surgery world. One thing that is out of your control is age. Eyes get old with your body and there is nothing you can do to stop it. However, you eye doctor can help you gauge if and when Lasik is right for you. If you vision begins to degrade there still may be a way to live life without glasses. There is a small risk involved with Lasik surgery. However, thousands of such surgeries are performed every year with very few cases that just go bad. For many, Lasik is worth the risk of the potential benefit received. While you can have Lasik surgery on both eyes at the same time, you should plan for some recovery time. Many careers are compatible with a prompt return to work after Lasik procedures. You and your doctor will have to decide when you can go back to performing your normal duties though. If you want to learn more about lasik surgery, make sure you check out information-packed site, Tennessee Lasik Surgery Guide. Portrait of Ron Wright, whose death left a vacancy.Image: United States Congress.

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, independent candidate Adrian Mizher agreed to answer some questions by phone on March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Mr Mizher.

Mizher describes himself as a senior loan closer on his LinkedIn profile at BBVA USA, a Birmingham-based subsidiary of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria. He has lived in Kennedale, Texas for five years and the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area for 16 of the last 24 years. A cum laude graduate of Southwestern Adventist University, he grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has lived for eight years in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He endeavours to bring “a never ending fight for fidelity to the Constitution and promotion of our Conservative values”, speaking to Wikinews on matters ranging from the economy to immigration.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

Guaranteed Targeted Blog Traffic In 11 Easy Steps

By Robert A Kearse

You are going to achieve this goal by making comments on blogs closely related in theme to your own blog.

But there are several key steps that will make your goal of targeted blog traffic a lot easier to reach.

(1) EVERY DAY type the most important keyword you are trying to rank your blog for into Google Blog Search at http://blogsearch.google.com

(2) Make a comment on relevant blog posts if you can add something meaningful to the discussion/post.

The first comments get by far the most readership so it pays to be first to make a comment to maximize your blog promotion.

By using Google blog search you will often come across blog posts that are only minutes or hours old.

(3) Keep a blog post comment file in a handy place.

Record any comments you are likely to repeat on other blogs. Number the paragraphs.

You will find it easy to quickly mix and match and copy and paste your recorded comments to make relevant and meaningful blog contributions.

I keep my file in my email draft section.

Use ******************* at the start of the subject line so you can locate the file instantly

(4) Keep a file entitled “Blogs where I have posted a comment”

Enter this data for each blog you comment on

Blog name:

Post title:

Post url:

Alexa rank:(see #11 below)

Date:

The above data will prevent you from making the same comment twice on a

blog.

Also you definitely want to REVISIT highly rated blogs that get a lot of blog traffic. (The lower the Alexa number, the MORE traffic the blog is getting).

By making more than one comment on a continual basis on a blog you are establishing a RELATIONSHIP with that blog owner, and success on the Internet (and in business in general) is all about relationships.

Another reason you want to record the Alexa rank is for when you revisit the blog post weeks or months later, you can see how much progress that blog is making in attracting targeted traffic.

You want to increase your involvement with blogs that are showing significant improvement. Make sense??

Keep your comment file in your email draft section.

Use =>=>=>=>=> at the start of the subject line so you can locate the file instantly

You can set up multiple accounts at http://Backtype.com to help you keep track of your posts, but its spider does not reach all corners of the Web yet.

One of your Backtype accounts will be for your private reference, because the comments may be repetitive and so not very useful collectively to another individual.

(5) Repeat this process for your blog’s second and third most important keywords

(6) Repeat this process for long tail keywords you have selected that have a high commercial value.

(These are the long tail keywords individuals use when they are looking to buy rather than browse.)

(7) If you don’t have a direct hyperlink to your blog in the comment you offer, then be sure to use the critical keyword IN PLACE OF your name in the appropriate box of the comment form.

(8) The specific blog url (permalink, category url, etc.) goes in the url box of the comment form.

(9) Sign the comment with your REAL full name.

In other words, BRAND yourself.

(10) Do not susbstitute keyword for name on blogs that have the CommentLuv plugin. This plugin will automatically show your last blog post so you don’t need another link to your blog.

(11) Download and install the Alexa Toolbar (5 minutes)

This is a very important research tool that you will benefit from every day you are active on the Internet. It is one measure of how much traffic any particular site is getting, and is solid knowledge you can make use of in many ways.

You should use Alexa to measure your own progress in blog traffic and blog promotion.

The key is DISCIPLINE.

Following these 10 steps above on a regular basis will dramatically improve your Alexa score over the long run, improve your targeted traffic, and help establish YOU as an authority in your blog’s subject area.

Iran’s morality police crack down on un-Islamic dress

Wednesday, April 25, 2007

The Iranian police forces have faced criticism from Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi, the head of the judiciary who was appointed by Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for their re-invigorated campaign to do away with un-Islamic dress.

Ayatollah Shahroudi proclaimed, “Tough measures on social problems will backfire and have counter-productive effects.” Others have, of course, made it clear that un-Islamic dress can lead to moral corruption, engender innumerable vices, and hurt the Islamic character of the nation.

Some believe that no one had any issue with the creation of an Islamic atmosphere. The core of the matter revolves around the implementation of the Islamic dress code; additionally, heavy-handed measures should be shunned. For instance, Mehdi Ahmadi, information head of Tehran’s police, told Al Jazeera: “Some citizens may complain about the way the law is being enforced but they all agree with the plan itself.”

According to one student, “You simply can’t tell people what to wear. They don’t understand that use of force only brings hatred towards them, not love.” Nevertheless, Hojatoll-Islam Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi, Iran’s interior minister who is in charge of policing, prognosticated positive feedback from the populace when he said, “People are unhappy with the social and moral status of the society. They expect that the fight against social insecurity be properly implemented.” Thus, Hujjat al-Islam Pour-Mohammadi re-iterated the necessity of proper implementation and methodology towards the restoration of morality in the Islamic Republic. Islamic officials and religious people affirm that this is indispensable to promote righteousness, curb sin, and bring open sinners to justice.

Following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, hijab became mandatory in Iran for every woman including foreigners after over 98% of citizens voted for an Islamic government. Women may face caning up to 74 strokes for failing to observe hijab. In this recent crackdown, the authorities have arrested many citizens throughout the country. Not only have women been taken into custody for their hair being uncovered on their foreheads and tight clothes that show body shapes, For men they need to cover from knee to their waist as according to Sharia. Even a foreign journalist was detained because the photograph on her press card was indecent.

It has not been clear whence the directive for the re-newed clampdown emanated. Some have blamed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad while Gholam Hossein Elham, the government spokesman, stated to reporters, “The police work as agents of the judiciary to confront crimes. The government as an executive body does not interfere in the affairs of the judiciary.” The following pre-election speech seems to corroborate this latter statement:

In reality, is the problem of our people the shape of the hair of our children? Let our children arrange their hair any way they wish. It doesn’t concern me and you. Let you and me overhaul the basic problems of the nation. The government should fix the economy of the nation and improve its atmosphere…[It should] better psychological security and support the people. People have variegated tastes. As if now the arch obstacle of our nation is the arrangement of our kids’ hair and the government disallowing them <He chuckles>. Is this the government’s responsibility? Is this the people’s merit? In actuality, this is the denigration of our people. Why do you underestimate and belittle the people? It is the real issue of our nation that one of our daughters donned a certain dress? Is this the issue of our nation and the problem of our nation?

Creekstone Farms sues USDA for refusing to allow mad cow testing

Monday, March 27, 2006

Creekstone Farms Premium Beef, an organic meatpacking company based in Arkansas City, Kansas, filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for what the company claims is threats by the USDA that it would face prosecution if it proceeds with plans to test nearly 100% of its beef for Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, also known as mad cow disease or BSE.

The USDA position is that allowing any meatpacking company to test every cow would undermine the agency’s official position, a position that holds to random testing as a scientifically adequate measure to assure safety. It also claims that 100% testing does not ensure food safety because the disease is difficult to detect in younger animals.

The USDA currently tests about 1% of cattle slaughtered in the U.S. The USDA’s objection is believed to be the result of pressure from larger meatpacking operations. In 2004, the president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association told the Washington Post that “If testing is allowed at Creekstone, we think it would become the international standard and the domestic standard, too.” Creekstone Farms says tests cost about $20 per animal, increasing the cost of beef by about 10 cents per pound.

Bluetongue disease appears in UK for the first time

Saturday, September 22, 2007

Bluetongue affects ruminants such as sheep and cows, but is not known to affect humans. It is sometimes fatal, depending on the animals affected, and presently has no treatment. The disease was prevalent in Africa for many years and had since migrated to European nations such as France and Germany, causing officials had feared a UK outbreak in the UK follows recent outbreaks of the disease on the European continent in nations such as France and Germany.

Experts such as microbiology professor Hugh Pennington of Aberdeen University had suspected the disease would eventually spread to the UK.

Shuttle launch called off due to faulty fuel tank sensor

Wednesday, July 13, 2005

NASA control room

The U.S. space agency NASA called off the launch of Space shuttle Discovery today after a problem with a fuel sensor in the external tank used to detect fuel exhaustion. According to the agency-run NASA TV, the low-fuel sensor was either malfunctioning or damaged. The launch was already facing the threat of a scrub due to thunderstorms in the area.

The sensor is one of four used to trigger the engine cutout after launch. Although only two are required for normal operation, and the Shuttle can be flown with one, NASA elected to maintain full redundancy. Should more of the sensors fail, the engine might burn out due to lack of fuel, a situation that has not been tested.

The problem was detected during a simulation of an empty tank. When placed in a mode simulating an empty tank, three of the sensors correctly registered that the tank was empty, while the faulty sensor stayed in the “full” state. NASA is currently unsure whether the problem relates to the sensor, the instrumentation circuits reporting the sensor’s state, or the simulation circuits.

The problem comes after a separate incident yesterday when a cockpit window cover fell from the Orbiter, damaging thermal protection tiles. A similar problem caused the replacement of the fuel tank in June. NASA described the problem as an “intermittent fault”.

The launch, which was scheduled for 3:51 ET (20:51 UTC), would have been the first launch of a shuttle since Columbia‘s February 2003 crash which killed all crew members aboard.

It is still unknown to NASA officials what caused the sensor to become defective. It is also unknown at the moment whether the issue will be fixed on the launch pad, or in the Vehicle Assembly Building – in which it takes close to a full day’s time to transport a shuttle between the two areas.

In the interim, the crew of the shuttle will stay at KSC unless there are further delays, in which case the crew might be transported back to JSC in Houston for refresher training.
