Australian company to make solar power with space technology

Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Solar Systems Pty Ltd, Hawthorn, Victoria, have announced an agreement with Boeing Australia Ltd for supply of Spectrolab solar cells. The agreement will result in the supply of 500,000 cells, capable of generating 11MW of electricity.

Spectrolab produces multi-junction solar cells, originally designed for powering satellites. The solar cells are three times more efficient than the cells used in typical domestic solar panels, and are capable of converting light energy to electrical energy with up to 34% efficiency according to NREL’s National Centre for Photovoltaics. Solar Systems utilise Spectrolab’s multi-junction solar cells to increase the output of their dish systems.

Solar Systems have already trialed the cells in one of their CS500 concentrating solar dishes installed at a solar power station in Hermannsburg, Central Australia, established to reduce the consumption of diesel in the remote community. Simply replacing the existing cells with the Spectrolab multi-junction solar cells increased output from 24kW to 34kW.

Solar Systems is planning to use the technology in a solar power station it will build in northern Victoria, with a capacity of 154MW.

Five injured as Adam Air 737 overruns Batam island runway

Tuesday, March 11, 2008

On Monday, five people were injured after a Boeing 737-400, operated by Adam Air, overshot the runway today while landing at Hang Nadim Airport on the island of Batam in Indonesia.

The aircraft skidded 75 metres (245 feet) into a grassy field after touching down in rainy conditions. Damage was done to the right wing, hydraulics and main landing gear. The plane came to rest with the nose in the air and leaning towards the right.

Of the 176 passengers (one source says 174) and crew on board, five passengers required treatment for neck and head injuries.

Adam Suherman, president of the airline, said the plane had skidded 10 metres beyond the extreme end of the runway. He also gave the time of the crash as 10:40 and noted that the plane was currently resting on soft ground.

Suherman gave the registration of the aircraft as PK-KKT. This would make the aircraft the one Boeing gave the serial number 24353 and owned by CIT Group Incorporated.

Adam Air spokesman Danke Drajat described the plane as having been in “good condition” at its last major inspection in December. He suggested the weather condition may be to blame for the crash, the third to strike the budjet carrier in just over a year. On New Year’s Day in 2007 Flight 574 crashed into the sea, leaving 102 missing, presumed dead. The following month the fuselage of Flight 172 cracked in half during a hard landing. Both involved Boeing 737 aircraft.

Pantun Banjarnahor, Hang Nadim Airport’s chief of operations, said that visibility was adequate for a safe landing. The airport was closed for over two hours. It is unclear how many flights were affected.

The National Transportation Safety Committee is investigating.

Propagating A Bonsai Tree By Grafting And Air Layering

Propagating a Bonsai Tree By Grafting And Air Layering

by

Andrew Kozlowski

Many bonsai enthusiasts derive great pleasure from growing their own bonsai trees. Some like to plant the seeds themselves and nurture them from sprouts to young trees, ready for shaping. Others prefer to take cuttings from a parent tree so they can grow a new tree with the parent tree s characteristics. Still others like to grow bonsai from air layering a technique that s been practiced in Asia for thousands of years or grafting, which is typically used by gardeners at bonsai nurseries. These last two propagation techniques are a bit more difficult to master than growing from seeds or cuttings, but they are reliable methods to grow your own bonsai.

Layering involves creating a new bonsai from the developed branches of fully-grown trees or shrubs. One of its advantages is that you will have a mature tree in one growing season, much faster than other methods. The principal behind layering involves intentionally injuring the tree to interrupt the flow of nutrients, or sap, from its roots to a branch. In order to survive, the injured part of the branch will first form a callus and then new buds that form roots to pull nutrients and moisture from the environment. This branch will then eventually become a new bonsai. Layering should always be done in the spring when the tree is growing and the sap is rising, no matter what the species.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFw7OYjHVT8[/youtube]

There are two techniques to air-layer a tree: the tourniquet method and the ring method. With the tourniquet method, you wrap a wire tightly around the branch to partially stop the flow of sap. As the branch slowly grows, the wire will become tighter, digging into the bark and then underlying soft, green cambium layer, stopping the flow of nutrients. The branch will be forced to grow new roots just above the wire. Some bonsai experts wrap the new rooting area with sphagnum moss, peat moss, or a plastic bag to protect it. Make sure you can water the area through the wrapping. Good species for the tourniquet method include cedars, junipers, azaleas, and wisteria.

The ring method involves using a sharp knife to cut a ring around the diameter of the branch and then remove the ring of bark. Make sure you remove the bark and the cambium, leaving just the tree s shiny hard wood or the tree will not grow new roots. You can dust the ring with hormone, found at bonsai specialty shops, and wrap it with moss or plastic wrap. Japanese maple, Chinese elm, and cotoneaster do well with this technique.

Your goal with either type of layering is to force the tree to send out new roots. They will be easier to see if you ve used plastic and not moss. It s important not to remove the branch from the parent tree too soon. Once you can see a mass of roots, or root ball usually within three-to-six months, you can cleanly cut off the branch and place the root ball in a pot filled with peat most. Freshly potted air-layered plants should be placed in a damp, humid area and misted regularly.

Grafting is a complex method that involves combining two plants either two parts of the same plant or of two different plants. This is done by exposing the cambium, the layer under the bark, and joining the two parts together and allowing them to heal or graft together. The cambium of both the transplanted plant, or scion, and the rootstock or under-stock (plant which interacts with the soil) must be kept in contact with each other for several weeks for the graft to take place. The scion is usually a short piece of stem with one or two buds, and the rootstock will become the new root system. Generally, the closer in species two different plants are, the better the chances of a successful graft.

The Mystery Of Prayer}

Submitted by: Irvin Rozier

The act of prayer is surrounded with much mystery

Prayer to God can change the course of history

Men first began to call on God many years ago

This is recorded in Genesis four and 26 you know

I don’t know whose prayer to God was the first

Maybe it was for water to quench a mighty thirst

But I thank the Lord that this one paved the way

So many others who followed can to God pray

Saints’ prayers are full of odors stored in golden vials

Some are ones I prayed during my troubles and trials

Angels add incense to these prayers of the saints

They are presented to God who never slumbers or faints

At times I’ve prayed and the Lord answered right away

At times I’ve prayed and the answer never came my way

But I will keep on praying to God who reigns on high

The answer will come today, tomorrow or bye and bye

The defending champions, the United States women’s national basketball team, are perceived as the Australian Opals’ main competitors. In the last three Olympic Games the Opals got silver medals. In each of these cases the United States got first place. Coach Carrie Graf said “thinking about the US too soon in inappropriate”, “Our focus is first and foremost, game by game winning our pool”. Amongst the Australian Opals’ competitors in the pool are Brazil, Russia, and Great Britain. Carrie Graf said Great Britain “will put up a fight on home turf” but there is a “world class [AIS] facility” and “world class medical support staff” supporting the team.

Australian Opal player Penny Taylor recently suffered injury from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, meaning she cannot play Olympics this year. In regards to the situation player Lauren Jackson, who is going into her fourth Olympics, said “you would never wish that upon anybody.” She says as a team they have to “move on, move through that” and “come together” to pick up their offence and defense. Despite the loss of one of their key players she says “we definitely have the talent there” and the team is all “on the same page.” She feels “pretty confident” and speaks of “very exciting” times ahead. Jenna O’Hea is going into her first Olympics with the team. She is still “pinching” herself and says she is taking it “day by day”.

A typical day at the camp might start with a 7.00am – 8.30am breakfast at the AIS Dining hall, before one and a half or two hours of court, gym, or swimming training. The middle of each day might consist of media meetings, medical checks, team meetings, and time to practise shooting. Around 12.00pm, the players meet to eat lunch and recover from the morning. The afternoon typically consists of more training, and some scrimmage games. Players usually finish around 7.00pm for dinner, and perhaps a massage.

The nineteen players in attendance this week at training camp were Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Elizabeth Cambage, Rohanee Cox, Cayla Francis, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Natalie Hurst, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O’Hea, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, Kristen Veal, Carly Wilson, and Hanna Zavecz. Basketball Australia has named fifteen players that are to attend the second phase of the camp: Suzy Batkovic, Abby Bishop, Elizabeth Cambage, Kristi Harrower, Laura Hodges, Lauren Jackson, Rachel Jarry, Kathleen MacLeod, Jenna O’Hea, Erin Phillips, Samantha Richards, Jennifer Screen, Belinda Snell, Marianna Tolo, and Hanna Zavecz.

Venezuela opens granite processing facility in Bolívar

Monday, February 18, 2013

Venezuela’s government has opened a granite processing plant in the state of Bolívar, with the intention of providing about 25% of the granite required nationwide.

Ricardo Menéndez, vice president of the Productive Economic Area, said Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has yearned for the creation of this project to empower Venezuelan construction. Granito Bolívar is reportedly the most modern Venezuelan granite plant, not consuming community water or electricity, and is also the largest, with a daily capacity to supply enough material for use in construction of about 820 houses.

Menéndez said, “These granite blocks are the natural resources of our country, are the wealth we have as a country and often [some] simply decided to remove this richness from our country and take them to other countries” ((es))Spanish language: ?Esos bloques de granito son la riquezas naturales de nuestro país, son las riquezas que tenemos como patria y que muchas veces sencillamente esas riquezas decidieron sacarlas de nuestro territorio nacional y llevarlas a otros países.

According to Menéndez, with the help of a state plan, Venezuela intends to exploit its 40,000 million cubic meters or more of granite reserves, generating a set of factories. “[T]he central theme is that these plants, all these factories, are for the construction of socialism; that means using our potential, develop the value chain within the country and of course that yields benefits from the point of view of the production system’s organization…. [Granito] Bolívar is not only the vision that historically we had of exposing richness, but the industries, basic industries we have, that level of our workers in the basic industries and in addition the development of the potential we have in the state” ((es))Spanish language: ?el tema central es que estas plantas todas estas fábricas son para la construcción del socialismo, eso significa utilizar nuestras potencialidades, dessarrollar la cadena de valor dentro del país y por supuesto que eso genere beneficios desde el punto de vista de la organización del sistema productivo …

For the construction of the plant, supplied by 23 quarries, the government of Bolívar provided about 30 million bolívares (US$4.7 million) and the national government €2.3 million (US$3 million). Bolívar reportedly has reserves of about 40,000 million tons of red, black, pink and white granite, sufficient for domestic demand for 200 years.
