Pen-Ek Ratanaruang’s latest film makes Thailand premiere

Wednesday, June 6, 2007

Following a world premiere during the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, the latest film by Thai auteur Pen-Ek Ratanaruang made its Thailand premiere on Tuesday night in a screening for the press and celebrities.

Before the screening of the new film, Ploy, the director and his stars took the rostrum for a question-and-answer session, during which Pen-Ek pulled out a digital camera and took photos of the presenter, the press and the actors.

Ploy is a drama film, about a middle-aged Thai-American couple, portrayed by popular Thai soap opera actress Lalita Panyopas and Pornwut Sarasin, a first-time actor whose day job is working as vice president of Thai Namthip, the distributor of Coca Cola in Thailand. The couple have returned to Thailand for the first time in many years to attend the funeral of a relative.

They arrive at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport at 5 a.m. after a long-haul flight from the U.S., and check in to a hotel. The wife, Dang, just wants to sleep, but the husband, Wit, wants some cigarettes, so he goes to the hotel bar to buy some. There, he strikes up a conversation with a 19-year-old girl named Ploy (17-year-old first-time actress Apinya Sakuljaroensuk), who’s waiting at the hotel for her mother.

Wit then invites the girl to his and Dang’s room, so she can take a shower and relax. This poor judgment by Wit ignites feelings of jealousy and anger in Dang, and causes the couple to review their marriage of seven years.

Lao-Australian leading man Ananda Everingham is in a supporting role as the hotel bartender. As a counterpoint to Wit’s and Dang’s bickering, the bartender engages in an erotic tryst with a hotel maid (model-actress Porntip Papanai) in a nearby room.

The press screening was held at SF World Cinemas at CentralWorld shopping mall in Bangkok. Given the presence of Coca-Cola’s Pornwut in the cast, it was perhaps not a coincidence that cans of Coke Zero, a new soft drink that is just being introduced in Thailand, were being doled out for free.

According to early reviews at Cannes, Ploy contains a high level of nudity and eroticism, which is uncommon for a Thai film, because Thailand has no film-ratings system and instead adheres to a strict censorship code that excises nakedness and sex scenes.

Ahead of its Thailand premiere, Aphiradee Iamphungphorn, co-producer for Five Star Production, said she knew the film would have to be re-edited for Thailand, but “hopefully not more than we can bear.” To get past the censors, Pen-ek created a special Thailand edit of the film, in which the sex scenes are toned down.

Ploy is the director’s sixth feature film since he made his debut in 1997 with Fun Bar Karaoke, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival. Since then, his films are regularly featured on the festival circuit, and are submitted by Thailand’s film industry for consideration by the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.

Pen-Ek’s latest film is a return to screenwriting, after his previous two films, Last Life in the Universe and Invisible Waves, were scripted or co-scripted by Thai writer Prabda Yoon. It also marks a reunion with leading actress Lalita, who starred in his second feature, 1999’s black comedy, Ruang Talok 69, as well as Porntip, who co-starred in Pen-Ek’s 2001 musical-comedy-drama Monrak Transistor.

Ploy opens in Thailand cinemas on Thursday.

Tour de France: Cancellara wins 7.9 km time trial prologue

Saturday, July 7, 2007

At least half a million onlookers turned out to line the route as the Tour de France Prologue closed the streets of Central London for a day. Setting off at one minute intervals the 180 plus riders took less than ten minutes to speed past some of London’s most memorable landmarks. With the eventual winner World time-trial champion Fabian Cancellara completing the 7.9 kilometre individual time trial in 8 minutes 50 seconds.

The Tour had to compete with more familiar sporting events, the British Grand Prix, the closing stages of Wimbledon and with the Live Earth concerts for the heart’s of the British public. However some say as many as a million turned out for the Gallic extravaganza; the party atmosphere aided by a turn in the weather, the sun coming out for the first time all summer.

Run on the second anniversary of the 2005 terrorist attacks and at a time of heightened security, policing was successfully discrete the most visible police presence, by way of their novelty being, 45 members of the Gendarme Nationale.

Coming to England for the first time since 1994 fans new and old had the course of the day and the three hours of the trials to familiarise themselves with the French institution. The initial good natured cheering on of every rider, growing into real excitement as the shape of the race emerged. At the end of the day the standings were:

Pond Liners Buyer Beware

Submitted by: Doug Hoover

Do you waste your money on lottery tickets? Feed your hard earned money to the one-armed bandits in the casinos? Drive without a seat belt? Then a pond liner is for you. You obviously like taking chances and are not too concerned about the outcome. Well, when someone spends thousands of dollars on a liner pond, they are playing the odds. Will their liner pond leak or not. From my 26 years experience in the pond business, I can assure you that the odds are not in your favor. This is an article the liner pond dudes do not want you to read. If you were not giving my industry such a bad name, there would be no need for this writing.

The liner pond gurus such as the “Liner messiah” with his own magazine and catalog, recruits unsuspecting followers with a “Build a Liner Pond Day”, and shows how easy it is to get something for next to nothing. Here is what these liner pond guys do:

o Lay out the pond with a garden hose

o Remove the sod and dig the hole

o Drop in our guaranteed line

o Fill with wate

o Drop in our pump

o Run our pipe

o Throw a piece of our liner on the pile of discarded dirt

o Stick in our filte

o Cover pile of dirt with loose rock

o Turn on our pump

o Throw in your fish

o Collect your money and split.

Does this sound a bit harsh on the pond liner industry? Well, here is “the rest of the story. “I am going to add a few more items that the liner pond guys omitted:

o Ground squirrels

o Gophers

o Mice

o Rats

o Chipmunks

o Moose

o Sharp rocks

o Heavy rocks

o Falling rocks

o Sharp objects

o Tree roots

o Plant & weed roots

o Leaky drain seal

o Leaky skimmer seal

o Kids with sharp or pointed objects

Did the liner pond guy offer you a discount if any of the above occurred in your pond? Here is what you would have had to do if any of them happened in your newly-built liner pond (and I know the Liner Guy did not give you this list):

o Take out the fish

o Turn off the pump

o Take out the loose rock (hope you did not use too many)

o Pump out the pond

o Take out the pump

o Take out the line

o Spread out the liner on the lawn

o Clean off the dirt and algae

o Inspect every square inch of the liner for holes.

(Sure, there are short cuts, but if you assume you have fixed the problem after patching a hole, put everything back and then discover there was more than one hole, you might be a tad irritated. Remember this rule of thumb: one pinhole and you can lose five gallons of water every 24 hours!)

o Patch the hole or holes

o Repeat the whole process over again, only in reverse.

Hey, sound familiar? It should, with the exception of laying out the garden hose and digging a hole, you have just built another water feature!

If it had been done the professional way to begin with, all this time to tear it apart and put it back together could have been used to design and build another permanent project with steel and concrete.

Can you imagine if this scenario was referring to a project involving large boulders that were set in place with heavy equipment such as an end loader or crane? Not to mention lawn sprinklers, flower gardens, trees and shrubs that were growing there, and sidewalks and hardscapes installed! It can cost 30% more to tear out a liner pond and replace it with a professional one made with rebar and concrete. Where as if they had built a professional waterfall and pond in the first place it would have only cost about 20% more. Does the term penny wise and pound foolish mean anything to you?

Look before you leap and research before you weep. Happy koi, peace and joy.

Sulpicio Lines pay PHP6.2 million for death of man in 1998 ferry disaster

Thursday, July 3, 2008

Sulpicio Lines, a ferry company in the Philippines, have been ordered to pay PH?6.24 million over the death of a man on board MV Princess of the Orient, which sank in stormy weather off Batangas in 1998. Ernesto Unabia was one of seventy confirmed fatalities in the disaster, which left eighty more missing.

Unabia was a 37-year-old seaman who worked on international vessels, and earned a ?120,000 salary. According to widow Verna Unabia, who filed the case with her three children, he was going to work on for thirteen more years and then retire. Unabia’s case is the first to be concluded, although most victims settled with Sulpicio without claims being filed.

Although Sulpicio lost their appeal several weeks ago, reporters have only today received access to documentation concerning the case.

Under Philippines law, employers are responsible for their employees actions. However, in Pestaño vs. Sumayang the Supreme court ruled that if it could be proved an employer had taken appropriate diligence when selecting employers then they could not be held responsible.

It was viewed that Sulpicio was responsible as they failed to remove captain Esrum Mahilum from the vessel despite a number of incidents involving the ferry while he was in command of it. Princess of the Orient had struck the bottom of Manila‘s North Harbour, sideswiped a container ship and suffered a crippling engine fire while berthed at North Harbour, being towed first to Cebu and ultimately Singapore for repairs.

Despite these serious incidents while the ship was under Mahilum’s care, however, he was not removed from captaincy or even disciplined. A Board of Marine Inquiry (BMI) investigation into the ultimate sinking of the Princess of the Orient would later say that Sulpicio did not have enough initiative to take action against him. The court ruled this made them responsible for his actions.

On September 18, 1998, the day of the sinking, Captain Mahilum was warned before starting out that severe weather was approaching. He wrongly calculated that the storm was safely distanced and left port regardless, running into the storm two hours later. Princess of the Orient began listing to the left and a distress call was sent, but she sank before help arrived. The BMI’s report blamed the disaster on the captain making “erroneous maneuvers of the vessel before it sank.” He remains missing to this day.

After the court ruled that this made Sulpicio liable to pay civil damages an appeal was filed, in which Sulpicio said that the captain “valiantly tried to save his ship up to the bitter end. He heroically went down with his ship.” Although he failed to properly supervise the abandon ship order he gave, he was last seen helping passengers to board life rafts. Sulpicio further alleged that careful analysis of the BMI report showed he did not directly cause the disaster.

The court rejected the appeal, with judge Estella Alma Singco saying that while the failure to remove the captain wasn’t the direct cause, “such failure doubtless contributed materially to the loss of life.” Sulpicio were ordered to pay P6.240 million in lost earnings, P100,000 moral damages, P50,000 indemnity – which Sulpicio had already offered to all the families of the deceased – and P50,000 in pursuer’s litigation costs.

ACLU President Strossen on religion, drugs, guns and impeaching George Bush

Tuesday, October 30, 2007File:Nadine Strossen 5 by David Shankbone.jpg

There are few organizations in the United States that elicit a stronger emotional response than the American Civil Liberties Union, whose stated goal is “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States”. Those people include gays, Nazis, women seeking abortion, gun owners, SPAM mailers and drug users. People who are often not popular with various segments of the public. The ACLU’s philosophy is not that it agrees or disagrees with any of these people and the choices that they make, but that they have personal liberties that must not be trampled upon.

In Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with the President of the ACLU, Nadine Strossen, he wanted to cover some basic ground on the ACLU’s beliefs. Perhaps the area where they are most misunderstood or have their beliefs most misrepresented is their feelings about religion in the public sphere. The ACLU categorically does not want to see religion disappear from schools or in the public forum; but they do not want to see government advocacy of any particular religion. Thus, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore’s placement of a ten ton monument to the Ten Commandments outside the courthouse is strenuously opposed; but “Lone Ranger of the Manger” Rita Warren’s placement of nativity scenes in public parks is vigorously defended. In the interview, Strossen talks about how certain politicians and televangelists purposefully misstate the law and the ACLU’s work in order to raise funds for their campaigns.

David Shankbone’s discussion with Strossen touches upon many of the ACLU’s hot button issues: religion, Second Amendment rights, drug liberalization, “partial-birth abortion” and whether or not George W. Bush should be impeached. It may surprise the reader that many ideas people have about the most visible of America’s civil libertarian organizations are not factually correct and that the ACLU often works closely with many of the organizations people think despise its existence.

Why You Should Choose Natural Remedies?

By C. Grisham

Natural remedies basically consist of organic herbs and plant extracts known to cure diseases and common illnesses. Some of the popular herbal remedies today are those made from flowers, roots, tree barks, berries, and leaves. The big question is why do you have to choose these natural cures over pharmaceutical drugs? Here are what you should know about these natural treatments.

Natural remedies and herbal medicines are known to treat as well as improve both mental and physical conditions of the body. They are excellent alternatives for prescription drugs and with no possible side effects afterwards. Most of these natural cures can lower your blood pressure; treat diabetes, heart diseases, and even cancer.

Aside from being excellent in treating diseases, herbal medicines are also cheaper than pharmaceutical drugs. Why? Because pharmaceutical drugs need laboratory testing and manufacturing, which make these types of medicines even more expensive. On the other hand, natural cures are often from plants, fruits, and common household items you can easily find inside your home. These types of cure are not only convenient and accessible but also very potent making it very effective compared to other expensive drugs.

There are different types of natural medicines you can choose from; you might have already heard about gingko biloba, ginseng, slippery elm bark, uva ursi, raspberry leaf, comfrey, and the basic household items for natural treatment like honey, lemon, orange peel, etc. All these and many others are being used by different countries all over the world to give them both temporary relief and permanent treatment to their sickness. Natural treatment patients observed that with proper diet, healthy lifestyle, and regular exercise, they benefitted more from these natural cures, felt even better, and improved their overall health.

Of course you may also read some articles about the minor drawbacks of these alternative treatments. Actually they are not drawbacks but caution. You should be aware of the fact that not because people say they are ‘herbal’ it already means they are ‘natural.’ Before you take these alternative treatments, you have to understand very well which are effective for a specific disease and which are not. Unfortunately, there are some herbal remedies that can weaken one’s immune system if not given in correct dosages or if were not prepared properly. See, it is very important to know how you should prepare these natural cures, either taken raw or cooked, and how much you should consume. Overall, natural cures have been around for centuries and you might only need more information about these natural treatments so it may also be effective for you.

Of course, while all natural treatments have no serious side effects to the body, it is also essential to speak with your doctor about your decision to take herbal remedies as your alternative medicines. If you are currently taking prescription drugs and you decided to combine natural medicines for treating your sickness, you might end up with serious side effects. Therefore, it is vital that you discuss these natural remedies with your physician before you take them.

Samsung releases its first tablet computer

Monday, September 6, 2010

File:Samsung-galaxy-tab.jpg

At the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) industrial exhibition in Berlin, the South Korean corporation Samsung released its first tablet computer, called “Galaxy Tab”.

The device features the Android operating system and a seven-inch screen. Samsung’s own applications, called “Reader’s Hub” and “Media Hub,” display ebooks and videos respectively. Latest Flash, and an interface to stream to TV also are included. Wireless technologies supported include 3G networks, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.

The device is a competitor to Apple’s iPad. British newspaper The Daily Mail considered the appearance of the Galaxy Tab on the market as a serious event for Apple, because the device has a smaller screen, and Samsung was expecting to set a price 1.5 to 2 times lower than the iPad. Samsung were considering a ten inch screen on future models. Galaxy Tab is “the first of the company’s tablet devices”, as a spokesperson said.

Head of product portfolio Thomas Richter expressed optimism about the device’s market future : “This is not just another tablet. We call it a Smart Media device.”

Samsung’s head of mobile communications J.K. Shin was also positive about the release of Galaxy Tab, commenting that “[t]here is a new and emerging consumer demand that Samsung can satisfy since mobile is in our DNA.”

Be An Effective Employee Magnet Attract Good Employees

Submitted by: Marcus Kane

It is true that with the prevalence of resume falsifications in the employment world, finding reliable and trustworthy employees have become so difficult. It is no wonder why employment screening experts proliferated to assist employers in finding good employees.

But the truth is, it is not that difficult to attract good employees. Being an effective magnet for good employees means that you should be able to know what good employees want and offer these things to them when looking for people to fill up positions in your company.

1. Clear Job Description

A job description is the first means by which applicants learn about your company and about the position available. It is therefore important to write a clear and effective job description that will attract exceptional employees. For one, a job description should be able to clearly state the responsibilities and duties of the employee. Second, it should contain contact information of your company so that an applicant will be able to get in touch with you immediately.

2. Favorable Workers Compensation

Money is a good way to attract good employees because these people know their worth. You cannot expect them to run after you if what you are offering them is a measly salary. Of course, it would not be smart to offer an amount that is way beyond what you can afford. Just give out a competitive compensation to attract exceptional performers to apply for you company.

3. Excellent Company

Top achievers want to work for companies that have excellent reputation. Because of this, it is imperative that you work your way towards the top or maintain the peak of success that you already have achieved. This way, it will be easier for excellent employees to get attracted to your company.

4. Career Advancement

Companies that offer career advancements are more likely to attract excellent employees than those, which do not. Remember, an average worker will probably not mind doing the same thing over and over again for the rest of his or her life but a top achiever will look for something more challenging and will want to see progress in his or her career. If an applicant feels that he or she is not likely to go anywhere with your company, the applicant would probably look for another company to apply for.

5. Benefits and Security

Excellent employees look for benefits and security other than a favorable amount on their paychecks. They want all government-mandated types of benefits but they will be more attracted if you offer more.

6. Positive Working Environment

A good employee will not be able to work effectively in a setting where the employer bosses people around or where employees fight or gossip with each other all the time. A good employee will most likely avoid applying for companies with these kinds of environment.

7. Ample Time for Rest

Even top performers hate slave drivers. A company that exhausts a person’s energy to the last drop is a big turn off even for hardworking and talented employees.

All employers want good employees for their companies. The most effective technique for becoming a good employee magnet is to know what these people want, such as those mentioned above, and include these in your offering when looking for employees to work for your company.

Building partially collapses in New York City’s Upper West Side

Thursday, July 14, 2005

A building being prepared for demolition collapsed this morning in New York‘s Upper West Side around 9 a.m. EDT. Five people are known to be injured from the accident, as well as one rescue worker who was injured in the aftermath. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The building was a supermarket, which was being taken down to make room for a high-rise building, something that residents took issue with. The roof, front wall, and scaffolding all fell to the ground, as stated by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.

Soon after the incident at least 100 police and fire department personnel combed the wreckage for more victims, using search and rescue dogs to find people by scent. They quickly accounted for the twenty-five construction workers who were working on the supermarket. Most of the victims’ injuries were broken bones, including one person who broke all four extremities.

Subway lines 1, 2, and 3 have been closed or redirected in response, along with the M104 bus.
