The photos that were sent to Amy Polumbo, the current Miss New Jersey, in an effort to blackmail her and make her give up her crown did not faze the Miss New Jersey officials who had an opportunity to examine them as well the rest of the material sent in the extortion attempt. The photos were taken from Miss Polumbo’s Facebook (a social networking site) account and sent to Polumbo by a group calling itself the ‘Committee to save Miss America’. The Facebook website has since been taken offline.
The photos in question have been described by pageant Board President Nancy Johnson as “college theater kids” just “doing the silly things they do.” The pictures include one showing a young man who Polumbo said was her boyfriend biting her breast through her shirt, one of Polumbo in a limousine wearing jeans with her legs spread in the air in a ‘crotch shot’ and one of her in what appears to be a Halloween costume dress holding two small pumpkins up to her breasts. The actions of Polumbo in the photos were admittedly ‘not ladylike’, but shouldn’t cost her her crown, according to pageant officials. No one involved believes that the photos themselves are the problem. Apparently, the issue in this situation is the captions, which have been described as ‘hurtful’ and ‘vulgar’ by the press as well as pageant officials. It is not believed that Polumbo is the one who wrote the captions, or had anything to do with them being posted below the photos on the Facebook account. If Polumbia didn’t put the captions below the pics, and if she hasn’t violated her pageant contract, she has nothing to worry about. The three pageant officials who examined the material tell the press that they’re ‘on her side’. Amy Polumbo is a senior at Wagner College, a coeducational private liberal arts college located on Staten Island in New York City. Polumbo is a theater-performance major at the college, which enrolls about 1900 undergraduates and 400 graduate students, and is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
